BRITs 2019: The 1975 and Calvin Harris are big winners of the night

The 1975 and Calvin Harris were the big winners at the BRIT mukofotlari on Wednesday, each taking home two prizes.

However Dua Lipa, who had been nominated four times for this year’s awards ceremony, only took home one award from the event after she failed to bag awards in the other three categories.

The Give Yourself A Try hitmakers – made up of Matty Healy, Ross MacDonald, George Daniel, and Adam Hann -scooped the prestigious Best Album award for A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships.

They also managed to bag the best British Band gong, which they previously won in 2017, beating out the Arctic Monkeys and thanking them for being ‘inspiring and relevant’ during their acceptance speech.

He said whilst collecting the gong: ‘Thank you so much. We’re so humbled by this award, thank you everybody. Thank you to the BRITs, to everyone involved. Arctic Monkeys, for still being such an inspiring and relevant band in 2019, I know how hard that is. Thank you to my beautiful girlfriend for letting me write that stuff down. Thank you to all of our partners. This is mad, thank you so much, we love you!’

Ahead of their big wins the band were surrounded by fix claims, after the BRITs were hit by the claims after the results of two of the awards were released before the show had aired.

Victorious! Elsewhere in the evening, Calvin Harris also emerged victorious with two wins to his name, having bagged his first ever BRIT Award for Producer of the Year before going on to also win British Single of the Year for his track 'One Kiss' which features Dua Lipa

Earlier on Wednesday one eagle-eyed fan spotted that an advert played on UKTV referred to the band as BRIT Winners and revealed that they had been awarded the Best British Group and Album Of The Year awards.

Sharing a clip of the advert, the social media user said: ‘Here be the evidence. That’s either a massive marketing cock-up or management for The 1975 somehow knew already.. Anyway BRITs fans, spoiler alert, The 1975 win things’.

During the band’s acceptance speech one viewer, who had obviously seen the clip earlier in the day tweeted: ‘Remember that video of the 1975 being the winners of best group and best album before the show, something which is not supposed to be known at that time, well guess which two brits they won.’

During his acceptance speech, George said: ‘This is an incredible honour, there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t consider myself very lucky, and this is the icing on the cake. Of course there’s a load of people I need to thank but I’m not going to name anybody because I’ll forget somebody….

‘But to everybody that I get to work alongside thank you so much for all of your hard work, and to all those people at home who come to see us live and share the music, it means the world and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Former Critic’s Choice winner Jorja Smith took home the gong for British Female Solo Artist, beating Anne-Marie, Florence and The Machine, Jess Glynne and Lily Allen to take the British Female Solo Artist title.

As she received the award, she said: 'This is for all of us, for all the little girls and women who are just being themselves and loving everything they are doing. I didn't expect this at all, I want to thank everybody.'
