Wanderlust viewers were left ‘cringing’ once again as the raunchy
In the fourth episode Joy (Toni Colette) and Alan (Steven Mackintosh) struggled to make their open marriage work as she attempted to get her husband to take part in a sex act.
Alan, whose sex drive has fizzled out, was reluctant and the scene resulted in joy masturbating while her spouse watched on – leaving viewers blushing at the crude scene.
Elsewhere we saw the couple’s daughter Naomi (Emma D’Arcy) embark on a lesbian affair with their neighbour Rita (Anastasia Hille), who has harboured a secret crush on her since the start of the series.
Wanderlust viewers slammed the scenes on Twitter, as one called the masturbation moment ‘painfully awkward’.

While another said: ‘Cold as a dead kipper.’
And a third commented: ‘Wanderlust has smashed its socially awkward situations.’
Wanderlust follows the antics of Joy and Alan after they decided to have an open marriage when the passion went out of their relationship.
Joy’s justification for the change was that having sex with other people made her ‘fall in love’ with her husband all over again, but that didn’t seem to be the case in the latest episode.
She had spent the day with her first love Lawrence (Paul Kaye) whom she clearly still still harbours feelings for, before the pair shared a few kisses.
Joy pushed him away out of guilt and Alan was furious to learn what had happened, before his wife attempted to smooth things over in the bedroom.

She moved his hand to under her dressing gown and asked him to pleasure her while she stood over him but he found it awkward.
‘Do you want to try it lying down?’ he said.
Alan tried to continue but told her it was too late at night and they stopped, which seemed to crush Joy.
Later Naomi delivered a missed package to Rita’s house, which turned out to be a trampoline that they then put up together.

They were then seen testing out the trampoline before lying down and talking, which led to them kissing.
The steamy scenes were criticised by viewers, with one tweeting: ‘O its awkward…its painfully awkward!’
Another posted: ‘#Wanderlust is excrutiatingly awkward on sooo many levels.’

Alan and Claire took Joy and Joy’s new lover to a party thrown at the school (pictured) after news of their open marriage spread around the staff room. Joy gave a speech about their relationship which caused a huge row with Alan
‘This is cringe big time cringe,’ a third wrote.
The couple’s open marriage experiment was tested again tonight when Alan’s boss found out about his tryst with his colleague Claire (Zawe Ashton), which then spread around the school and started the rumour mill.
As an act of defiance Alan and Claire decided to bring Joy and her new lover to a charity night the school was hosting, but things turned sour when Joy won the raffle and had to get up on stage.
Joy has recently reunited with Lawrence and is struggling to hide her feelings for him. The pair went on a bowling date in tonight’s episode (pictured)
The former teenage flames kisses a few times (pictured) after the date but Joy told him to leave her alone as she didn’t think it was fair on Alan
She decided to use the opportunity to address the rumours, saying: ‘I feel it will be remiss of me if I didn’t say to you… because if anyone has any questions about what it is we’re doing or… please do come and.. because we’re really not trying to upset anyone or make anyone uncomfortable.’
The outburst caused an explosive row between the pair in which Alan said he didn’t think their open marriage was working, blaming Joy for making him fall in love with Claire.
Wanderlust continues next Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One
