Violent brawl fought with knives and hammers breaks out on 24 Hours in Police Custody

The shocking moment a street brawl in Luton broke out with youths wielding baseball bats which resulted in seven victims being taken to hospital – including one doused in boiling oil – is captured on camera on 24 Hours in Police Custody.

In tonight’s episode of the Channel 4 show, which airs at 9pm, CCTV images from the busy Sunday on 16 September 2019 reveal rival groups of men attacking each other outside a takeaway peri peri chicken shop on Saxon Road, with knives, and hammers.

Perpetrators are filmed swinging baseball bats and wielding hammers during the terrifying brawl that left seven people in hospital – including one 15-year-old boy.

Elsewhere, one man also appears to have hot oil thrown over him in the fight.

Three men – Mohammed Arshid, 37, Idnan Akbar, 28, and David Barnett, 24 – have since been sentenced to between 14 and 23 months for violent disorder outside the takeaway.

The violence comes at the worst possible time for Bedfordshire police as they are short of resources.

The Chief Constable admits to a local MP that the force has ‘literally ran out of officers.’

Eventually six men and a child are taken to hospital for treatment and the violence subsides.

It is left to Detective Scott Hannam of the Criminal Investigation Team to unravel what lay behind the eruption of violence.

After six men are arrested, his first line of enquiry is around the takeaway near where the fighting took place, police speculate that their are big profits to be made in chicken, Scott wryly observes, ‘Apparently they do very good peri peri chicken’.

It soon becomes clear that although his working assumption is correct – the immediate cause is related to a long running feud between two rival families over control of the lucrative spicy chicken trade from the premises.

There may also be other factors driving the repeated violence between the two sides, some of whom have previously been involved in drugs.

Cameras continue to follow the investigation when suddenly the story takes a dramatic new twist.

Police raid a premise following a tip off and to their surprise discover over half a million pounds of cannabis, crack cocaine and heroin.

And according to police, the disorder in Luton was started after a clash with a gang from Bedford earlier the same day.

Mohammed Arshid (pictured), 37, was convicted of violent disorder and two counts of possession of a weapon in a public place and jailed for 23 months

Meanwhile the disturbance and police lack of resources has caused a local MP to raise the issue in Parliament.

The trial of the men charged with the violence continues.

Detectives realise that some of the defendants will be represented by Attiq Malik a local solicitor.

Attiq Malik deploys far more than his standard advice of ‘No Comment’ on this case as he begins a search for evidence that he believes will exonerate his clients.

Three people were jailed in 2019 for their role in the violence, while three others were found not guilty.

David Barnett, 24, was convicted of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and jailed for 14 months, while Idnan Akbar, 28, was convicted of violent disorder and two counts of threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public place and jailed for 14 months.

Mohammed Arshid, 37, was convicted of violent disorder and two counts of possession of a weapon in a public place and jailed for 23 months.

Arshid was also sentenced for his role in a similar clash nearby on 7 July 2019.

Luton Crown Court was told a similar clash took place in Blenheim Crescent in July, where police later found a knife, taser, axe and metal stake.

Meanwhile, Zahir Haseeb was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months for possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

Det Insp Craig Laws said: ‘These were two large-scale and extremely violent disorders which we absolutely will not tolerate.

‘Like so much knife crime, gun crime and other serious violence, these two incidents were linked to rival gangs and organised crime, with little risk to the wider public.

‘That being said, all of those involved have shown a brazen and blatant disregard for law and order, with people suffering serious injuries as a result.’
