Emmys viewers poke fun at The Crown’s Emma Corrin’s bizarre ensemble

The Crown’s Emma Corrin was ridiculed by social media users over her bizarre Miu Miu Emmys ensemble featuring a flesh coloured strapless gown, matching hooded cap and opera gloves.

The look, which was accessorised with long, talon-like fake nails, was a custom creation loosely based on a similarly outlandish design from the Italian label’s ‘Ski Collection’, which also features gloves and a stretched bonnet covering the ears.

Corrin, 25, best known for her role as Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown, appears in Miu Miu’s most recent ad campaign and is thought to have played an active role in designing her wacky red carpet look.

Horrified fashion fans lambasted the outfit, with one tweeting: ‘What in God’s name is that yellow outfit with the gloves and swim cap?’ Another posted: ‘Emma Corrin looks uncannily like The Handmaid’s Tale with their pale yellow bonnet at Emmy Awards.’

The outfit featured a shapeless, strapless column dress that did little for the actress’s svelte figure. The same plain beige material was used to create the ill-fitting opera gloves, which slouched on Corrin’s arms.

The strange head-to-toe look was topped with the cap or bonnet, which revealed just a glimpse of the actress’s hairline.

It is not known whether the look was requested by the actress and her team, or if it was given to her by the designer.

Typically an A-lister will play an active role in creating their red carpet look for a high profile event like the Emmys, meaning Corrin might have had a hand in shaping this controversial ensemble.

While a handful of fashionistas appreciated the wacky look, the majority were baffled.

One tweeted: ‘Why… why is Emma Corrin wearing an old-timey swimming bonnet at the Emmys?’

A fourth questioned: ‘Who was the woman at the Emmys wearing a yellow bathing/swim cap? Did she get lost returning from the Olympics?’

Reaction: Many social media users compared Emma's headpiece to a swim cap and questioned why she'd donned the statement attire

Emma, who changed her pronouns to she/they on her Instagram bio earlier this year, donned a pale yellow bonnet and matching floor-length dress from Miu Miu for the red carpet event.

Completing her attire with long fingerless gloves, Emma slicked her hair away from her face so that the headpiece could sit effortlessly, while opting for a glamorous makeup look.

Taking to Instagram to share some shots of her Emmy’s gown, Emma wrote: ‘crucible realness for EMMYS 2021’.

Others shared their astonishment and dislike of the outfit, with some comparing it to costumes worn in The Handmaid's Tale

As such, it seems the actress decided to channel Winona Rider’s character Abigail Williams from the 1996 drama The Crucible on Sunday.

The film is a dramatized story of the Salem witch trials and follows married man John Proctor (Daniel Day-Lewis) breaking off his affair with his young lover, Abigail Williams (Winona).

Winona’s character leads other girls in a rite to wish death upon his wife, Elizabeth (Joan Allen). When the ritual is discovered, the girls are brought to trial.

Emma has addressed her decision to publicly request her pronouns be she/they, explaining it was important to put her ‘authentic’ self out there.

Speaking with W magazine, Emma said: ‘It’s hard when you have a platform, but I want to make everything feel very authentic.

‘I think we’ve become much more aware of our positions in our communities and the circles in which we operate.’
