Alanis Morissette reveals she had postpartum depression which got worse after each pregnancy

Alanis Morissette has revealed that she had postpartum depression, which got ‘progressively worse’ after each of her three pregnancies.

The Ironic hitmaker, 47 – who shares Ever, 10, Onyx, five, and Winter, two, with husband Mario ‘Souleye’ Treadaway, 41 – admitted she is thankful to be ‘the other side’ of her mental health struggles.

Alanis also detailed the toll her postpartum depression took on her relationship as she opened up about how her marriage had its ‘train-wreck moments’ during her battles.

Alanis told the Today Show: ‘I had postpartum depression after each pregnancy, and with each kid it got progressively worse.

‘I’m happy to say that I’m finally on the other side of it — but it just happened in the last three months.’

The singer explained that the biggest issue was being unable to explain how she was feeling to her husband.

She said: ‘We’ve had our train-wreck moments because there’s no real way to show him what’s going on inside of my body no matter how many times I’ve attempted to articulate it.

‘Unless you’ve experienced it, it’s very hard to put into words and have people grok it.’

At the height of her depression, the singer confessed she felt like she was ‘underwater and covered in tar’.

Despite feeling ‘shame’ about going on medication, the star insisted she doesn’t regret taking pills because they have kept her ‘alive’.

Alanis admitted: ‘I had a lot of shame around being medicated. But it kept me alive and I have zero regrets. If it’s needed, just do it.’

Thankfully, the Jagged Little Pill singer now feels like her old self again after struggling for ‘so long,’ adding: ‘I feel like I have myself back. I didn’t have access to her for so long.’

The mother-of-three added how unhelpful it was when people would suggest she just needed to get some sleep or go for a walk because there is no ‘quick fix’ for depression.

She said: ‘When I was in the thick of it, some people would say, ‘Oh, she just needs to go for a walk.’ Or, ‘She just needs some sleep!’.

‘But news flash: It’s so multilayered. It’s biochemical, it’s neurochemical, it’s circumstantial, it’s environmental. It’s not just one thing, it’s not a quick fix.’

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

Postpartum depression occurs after the birth of a baby.

It affects up to 20 per cent of women in the US and 10 per cent in the UK.

This is different from baby blues, which commonly include mood swings, crying spells, anxiety and difficulty sleeping.

This is a more severe, long-lasting form of depression.

There may be problems of bonding with the baby, enjoying motherhood, periods of anger or rage, sadness and crying.

There may be the constant feeling of being overwhelmed or possible thoughts of harming yourself or running away and escaping.

PPD is one disorder under the group of illnesses called perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
