Euro 2020: Prince George, Prince William and Kate Middleton watch England vs Italy

Prince Georgeonce again stole the spotlight as he joined his parents the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to cheer on the Three Lions in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

Reflecting the mood of football fans across the country, seven-year-old George cheered in jubilation as England took the early lead against Italy – but ended the night looking devastated after the team lost to Italy in penalties.

A solemn-faced Prince William, who has been vocal in his support of the Three Lions, put his hands on his son’s shoulders in a moment of support as the game reached its dramatic conclusion.

Kate, who had spent the day at Wimbledon with her father, stood with an arm around her husband.

The royals joined VIPs including David Beckham, Kate Moss and Tom Cruise, as well as Boris and Carrie Johnson, in the box at Wembley tonight.

They started the evening in high spirits, with Prince George allowed to stay up late for the special occasion. George, who also joined his parents for the England vs Germany match, looked smart in a blazer, shirt and striped tie for the occasion, in a look that mirrored his father’s own smart ensemble.

Meanwhile Kate looked elegant in a white Zara blazer, white top and red statement earrings from London-based independent jewellery designer Blaiz – in a nod to the England colours.

After joining his parents for the national anthem, George threw his arms out and shouted in pure joy as Luke Shaw powered England to an early lead over Italy in the opening minutes.

The young royal then hugged his mother Kate, 39, in a moment that captured the unbridled excitement of millions across the nation before the night eventually ended in disappointment after England lost in penalties.

Earlier Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli revealed that Prince William wanted his son George to wear an England shirt to tonight’s match – but Kate Middleton was ‘not so keen’.

For her part, the Duchess of Cambridge looked typically polished in a white Zara blazer, top and statement red earrings by London brand Blaiz – in a nod to the colours of the England strip.

She made a quick dash across London to make it to Wembley in time for the final, after joining her father at Wimbledon today to watch Novak Djokovic win the men’s singles trophy.

Choose a crisp tailored blazer like the Duchess of Cambridge in Zara

The Duchess of Cambridge donned an effortlessly elegant Zara blazer to attend the Euro 2020 final at Wembley, proving once again that she’s inherently chic.

Cut to a slender single-breasted silhouette with classic tailored details, it’s a perennially stylish number, which couldn’t suit her anymore than it did.

She layered the smart silhouette over a neutral ensemble to continue the less-is-more mood, perfectly offsetting the muted tones of her look with bright, playful red earrings by Blaiz.

While this exact blazer isn’t available on Zara’s website, we’ve included an alternative and strikingly similar design from the retailer.

And that’s not all; we’ve sourced other timeless designs from the likes of Sandro, Alexander McQueen at NET-A-PORTER (feeling indulgent?) and Ted Baker.

One thing’s for sure: whichever you choose is destined to become a wardrobe hero.

Earlier, the Duchess of Cambridge cut an elegant figure in a Beulah London dress and £30 heels from Aldo, but she swapped the summer outfit for a more practical Zara blazer and trouser combination for tonight’s game.

Speaking today, Ms Bartoli revealed Prince George wanted to wear an England top to the match, rather than the smart shirt and blazer he ended up wearing.

She shared the revelation while providing commentary at the men’s singles final at Wimbledon this afternoon between world number one Novak Djokovic and Italy’s Matteo Berrettini for BBC Radio 5 Live.

Observing that just a handful of spectators at Centre Court were wearing Three Lions shirts, the French tennis star said: ‘Yesterday I had an afternoon tea with the duchess and it was very much a discussion whether George will be allowed to wear the jersey tonight at Wembley or not.

‘William was for it, Kate not so keen, so we’ll see.’ She also revealed that Kate likes her tea with ‘just a dash of milk’ while the Duke of Cambridge ‘puts some sugar in it’.

It is unclear if Ms Bartoli broke royal protocol by revealing what she discussed with the Duchess of Cambridge.

George, seven, did not attend last week’s football semi-final against Denmark, but went to Wembley to watch England’s clash against Germany at Wembley with his parents – dressed in a suit, tie and shirt.

As she arrived at Wimbledon today, Kate crossed her fingers for England’s bid for Euros glory while her ‘excited’ husband William praised Gareth Southgate’s squad and enthused: ‘The whole country is behind you’.

William shared a video message on Twitter in which he wished manager Southgate, Three Lions captain Harry Kane and ‘every member of the England team on and off the pitch’ the ‘very best of luck’.

The duke, who is also the President of the FA, appeared to be crossing his fingers for victory while at Wimbledon yesterday, where he and Kate attended the grand slam to watch Australia’s Ashleigh Barty win the tennis Championship in an epic three-set final against Karolina Pliskova.

William said: ‘Gareth, Harry and to every member of the England team on and off the pitch, just want to wish you the very best of luck tonight. What a team performance it’s been, everyone in the squad has played their part. All the backroom team as well have been truly essentially.

‘I can’t really believe this is happening. So exciting and I just wish you the very best of luck. You bring out the very best of England and we are all behind you. The whole country is behind you. So, bring it home.’

The duke’s grandmother the Queen paid tribute to the ‘spirit, commitment and pride’ of the squad in a good luck message. In her written message, the monarch recalled presenting the Jules Rimet trophy to Bobby Moore after England beat then West Germany in the World Cup – almost six decades ago.

She said: ‘Fifty-five years ago I was fortunate to present the World Cup to Bobby Moore and saw what it meant to the players, management and support staff to reach and win the final of a major international football tournament.

‘I want to send my congratulations and that of my family to you all on reaching the final of the European Championships, and send my good wishes for tomorrow with the hope that history will record not only your success but also the spirit, commitment and pride with which you have conducted yourselves.’

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Southgate and the players had ‘already made history’ by reaching the final, writing: ‘You have lifted the spirits of the whole country, and tomorrow we know you can lift that trophy too. We are not just hoping or praying.  We believe in you, Gareth, and your incredible squad.’

Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and England ended up losing the match on penalties.
