Speaking on Steph’s Packed Lunch on Monday, the ballroom star explained that the worry over how his hair looked started to ‘consume him’ but also admitted that the procedure ‘was painful’.

He said: ‘I started to lose my hair a few years ago… Every time I looked in the mirror it’s all I could see.’

He continued: ‘I had a period of time when I tried to do all my photos in profile… It’s sort of always on your mind. It starts to consume you.’

Asked whether losing his hair knocked his confidence, Anton said: ‘It does in certain aspects, not as a performer… In normal life.

‘You’re either ok with it or you’re not ok with it so if you know you’re not ok with it then, for me, it was a case of do something about it.’

Anton explained how the transplant came about, saying: ‘I was playing golf with Jimmy Nesbitt who’s famously had hair transplants and I went to his guy… It immediately transformed my life… All of that stuff that was going on went away.’

Steph also asked Anton whether it was painful to which he responded: ‘It is a painful procedure, so you accept it for what it is. It doesn’t hurt as much as looking into the mirror and seeing your hairline disappearing.’

Anton was very honest about having had the procedure in the aftermath of it.

He explained to Steph: ‘I owned it, I would talk about it… I had no interest in pretending. I wanted to go ‘look, I’ve had a bit of crop rotation, I’ve ripped a bit from the back and shoved it on the front.’

When he got the procedure in 2017 he explained at the time that he was left feeling insecure after noticing his receding hairline in pictures and on television.

Anton revealed he would cover it with make-up and he wouldn’t stand under certain lighting to ensure it wasn’t noticeable.

‘I think the one big thing for men is their hair. Women have all their things… But men have hair,’ he admitted to The Mirror.

‘I was looking at photos and images of myself on television and saw it was going a bit thin at the front. I’d cover it with make-up and make sure I didn’t stand under certain lights. Basically, I didn’t like it very much.’

The BBC star discussed how he feels more confident now when he takes to the ballroom to dance in front of the cameras for thousands of viewers at home.

‘I feel 25 again. It’s given me so much more confidence when appearing on television or having my picture taken,’ he added.

It comes after last month Anton revealed the best thing about being famous is the happiness it brings to his mother following her turbulent marriage to his father.

The star, who previously told how his father would beat him with a belt when drunk, said his success on the BBC show has had a big impact on his Spanish mother Ascension.

Speaking to BBC Sounds When I Was 25 podcast, Anton said he didn’t have a ‘light bulb moment’ where he realised his father’s abusive behaviour was unacceptable as he understood what the issues were

He said: ‘It’s sort of obvious that that’s not OK… the aggression and the alcohol. I didn’t have a light bulb moment and go ‘Oh, does your dad not do that?’

Discussing the impact his success has had on his mother, he added: ‘I love the fact people know I’m my mum’s son and people know my mum…

‘My mum is fabulous and lovely. I love that she’s sort of got a bit famous… and she comes along now and again to see the show and it’s great.’

While Anton lived at home for periods during his 20s, he did not have any interaction with his father at that point, saying their paths rarely crossed.

The dancer said that when his parents got divorced, his mum dyed her grey hair blonde and became a ‘rock chick’ he barely recognised.

Anton’s father Antal, who was from Hungary, died in 2001.
