Mumsnet user said neighbours wants her to pay £800 in vet bills after their cat cut itself

An outraged woman revealed her neighbours are asking her to pay their cat’s £800 vet bill after it ran into her home and cut itself on an open tuna tin.

Posting anonymously on Mumsnet, the UK-based woman explained her husband wanted to foot the bill ‘for a quiet life’ but she wanted to take a stand.

It prompted an outpouring of responses from horrified users, with one scathingly saying they should ‘pay for a backbone instead’.

The cat dilemma was part of a wider post detailing problems with the same set of neighbours, who also asked her to rearrange her garden to make it easier for them to park their cars.

In a lengthy post, the woman penned: ‘We’ve had civil but not friendly relations with our next door neighbours since they moved in 7 years ago. There is a two-part issue.

‘1. We have one car and half of our front garden is a driveway and the other half has plants and small trees on it. Next door has a smaller plot and have mostly a driveway with a hedge and raised planted border.

‘This driveway could easily fit 2 cars if they were normal-sized and you could fit two massive ones if you paid attention (another nearby neighbour with a slightly smaller plot manages two vans).

‘NDNs have two massive cars and a van. They park one car on the drive and the other car plus van on the road. I don’t have a problem with this.’

She continued: ‘However, they like to park as close to their house as possible and tended to block us in on our driveway. We would then have to ask them to move their car so we could get out.

‘It was problematic late at night or in emergencies. So we started parking our car on the road in front of our house so that we wouldn’t get blocked in.

‘This means they either have to block their own car in or park slightly further away from their house.’

She later revealed that the neighbours had come over to discuss the issue and suggested she should ‘dig up her garden and tarmac it’ to make space for the neighbours to park in front of her house without blocking her in.

While they were discussing the topic, the neighbour’s cat – who the woman also had issues with – ran into the house and cut his paw.

Users were quick to condemn the neighbours, adding that they should get rid of their own hedges to make more room or part with a vehicle in order to fit them on the drive

The woman later received a vet bill asking to cover the £800 cost.

Another said: ‘The neighbours would be well-advised to insure their car. If this is true then you and your DH need to be far more assertive.

‘If a neighbour had told me I should tarmac my garden in the way yours did, I would have said straightaway that wasn’t going to happen.

‘Are they newish neighbours and you’ve been there a long time? Are you older or younger than them and they think they can push you around?’

One pet owner said the neighbours were responsible for their pet and what it got up to outside, adding that their bills have never been as much as £800

While a third added: ‘The obvious solution is for them to get rid of one of their vehicles or move house.  Present them with that alternative. Buy a house with parking that meets their needs. Simple.’

They wrote: ‘1) driveway – nope. 2) vet bill – nope I’m a cat owner and wouldn’t be asking anyone to pay for the consequences of my cat being a nuisance.

‘I let my cat out of the house, I’m responsible for any damage it does to itself… (aside from malicious attacks or deliberate poisoning).

‘And as PP said, £800?! I think your neighbour is trying it on… The worst cut my cat ever sustained (nasty, had to have it revised and repaired in surgery) cost me less than £300.’

One user added: ‘I don’t think they have a legal claim about the cats injury. Seems more like an accident.

‘So I would write a note to say unfortunately we feel bad for your cats injuries and feel it’s an accident. We hope your cat gets better but wont be contributing or paying for the cats vets bill.’
