Colby Watson has filed a class action lawsuit against the 48-year-old Oscar winner’s wellness-focused brand in
In the legal documents seen by DailyMail.com Mr Watson adds that the nightstand on which he had placed the candle was left with a ‘black burn ring’, while the jar itself ‘is now charred and black’.
He insists that the candle was placed on a level surface while it was burning, and that there were ‘no objects or loose materials above or in close proximity to it’.
Under fire: Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle website Goop is being sued by a Texas man who claims her $75 This Smells Like My Vagina candle ‘exploded’ on his nightstand
Evidence: Colby Watson alleges that his candle (pictured) – which he says he purchased on the Goop website in January – became ‘engulfed in flames’
Popular: Gwyneth, 48, first released the tongue-in-cheek product in January 2020, and it sparked a flood of excitement and bewilderment, promptly selling out in days
Mr Watson does note in his lawsuit that the candle comes with a warning that it should not be burned ‘for more than two hours at a time’ – and admits that his was lit for ‘an estimated three hours or less’ when it allegedly ‘exploded’.
However, the plaintiff and his
The Texas resident is seeking in excess of $5 million in damages as part of the class action lawsuit – which also calls for Goop to provide compensation to anyone else who claims to have suffered a similar incident with their own candle.
Mr Watson’s lawsuit comes just four months after a London-based woman hit out at Goop, alleging that her own Vagina candle ‘exploded’ in her living room and sparked an ‘inferno’.
Jody Thompson, 50, from Kilburn, spoke out about the mishap in January, while also sharing an image of the charred candle remains.
‘The candle exploded and emitted huge flames, with bits flying everywhere,’ she told The Sun at the time.
‘I’ve never seen anything like it. The whole thing was ablaze and it was too hot to touch. There was an inferno in the room.’
‘We eventually got it under control and threw it out the front door.
‘It could have burned the place down. It was scary at the time, but funny looking back that Gwyneth’s vagina candle exploded in my living room.’
Expansion: She has since expanded the line of risque home fragrances to include an ‘orgasm’ version and a ‘prenup’ version
Repeat offender? In January, London-based woman Jody Thompson, 50, made similar claims about her own Goop candle, alleging that it had caused an ‘inferno’ in her living room
In his lawsuit, Mr Watson references this incident – accusing Goop of failing to ‘warn customers of a defect’, despite being ‘on notice’ about a potential issue since January, when Ms Thompson raised the alarm.
A spokesperson for Goop hit back at Mr Watson’s claims, insisting that his lawsuit is nothing but a ‘frivolous… attempt to secure an outsized payout’.
‘We’re confident this claim is frivolous and an attempt to secure an outsized payout from a press-heavy product,’ the spokesperson said.
‘We stand behind the brands we carry and the safety of the products we sell. Here, Heretic—the brand that supplies the candle— has substantiated the product’s performance and safety through industry standard testing.’
Gwyneth first released her tongue-in-cheek vagina candle back in January 2020, revealing that the home fragrance – which is described as having a ‘funny, gorgeous, sexy, and beautifully unexpected scent’ – started out as a joke between her and a perfumer.
However, the idea stuck, and the candle became a major success, selling out in a matter of hours after it was first unveiled on the Goop website.
In the 16 months since the vagina candle’s debut, Gwyneth has gone on to add several other varieties to the ‘This Smells Like’ range, which she created in collaboration with perfume brand Heretic.
The Goop website currently offers three different ‘This Smells Like’ fragrances: the original vagina scent as well as a ‘prenup’ and ‘orgasm’ version.
All three candles are currently sold out, as is the smaller ‘vagina’ votive, however customers can still purchase a $45 roll-on perfume in the vagina and orgasm scents.
