Coleen Nolan admits her recent romance ‘got her through’ lockdown

Coleen Nolan has admitted that her recent short-lived romance ‘got her through’ lockdown as she revealed that it was ‘nice to feel attractive and flirt again’.

The Loose Women star, 56, recently revealed that her six-month romance with her unnamed lover eight years her junior came to an end after he ‘couldn’t handle’ who she was.

Speaking to MailOnline as she helped Buzz Bingo colleagues prepare for the grand re-opening when restrictions lift on Monday, Coleen told how she hopes her next guy will be able to ‘handle’ her fame and what she does.

Discussing the recent relationship with the mystery gentleman, 47, Coleen explained: ‘I met a really nice guy online and it was all going really well.

‘We met a couple of times before the lockdown but then spoke constantly for six months, and it was all lovely and then just as the restrictions eased, he couldn’t handle who I was!

‘I think to be fair to him, there’s no animosity and I wasn’t heartbroken, we weren’t in a full relationship,  it was literally a vocal relationship, that’s all it could be because of lockdown.’

Speaking of how he helped her during the coronavirus pandemic, she said: ‘To be honest, it got me through lockdown really, because it was exciting and nice to feel attractive again and flirting again and all of those things.

Unfortunate: The Loose Women star, 56, recently revealed that her six-month romance with her unnamed lover eight years her junior came to an end after he ‘couldn’t handle’ who she was

‘But it wasn’t love at that point. To be fair to him, he’s just an ordinary guy and quite private, and he’s got kids of his own from his last marriage, I think probably in hindsight he just got cold feet and thought “I don’t know if she can handle what she does”.’

Coleen has had an illustrious career as a singer and TV presenter, finding fame as part of The Nolans, and she regularly features on TV with shows such as Loose Women, The Real Full Monty and At Home With The Nolans.

And the star told how whoever she begins a relationship with next must be able to handle her fame as she wouldn’t be able to resist having a gossip about him on screen.

She explained: ‘The thing is, whoever I meet will have to be able to handle it because I can’t keep my gob shut and he will be talked about on Loose Women and any other interview I do!

‘I think it was just that. I think he’s just a private normal guy, in a normal job, quite shy and private.

‘Initially I was a bit angry, only because I thought “you had six months to decide who I am”. We talked about it all the way through with things like that. And he was much calmer about it than I was.

‘So it was just a bit of a shock because I was meant to meet him on a Wednesday and then on Tuesday I got this text saying “look, I can’t handle it” and I thought “gosh!”‘

Speaking about the difficulty of remaining in a private relationship while in the public eye, she went on: ‘As soon as you say you’ve met someone, everyone wants to get the first picture of whoever it is.

Nice: Speaking of how he helped her during the coronavirus lockdown, she said: ‘To be honest, it got me through lockdown really, because it was exciting and nice to feel attractive again’

‘I did have loads of people saying “what’s his name, what does he do?” And of course I wasn’t giving any of that information out. I guess naively I thought, maybe we can stay private, but you can’t really, not with what I do.

‘Like I said, I’m not that kind of person. Loose Women is a lot of about life and I need to be with someone who I can say “he did this yesterday and he’s a pain in the butt” or whatever.’

But while she was disappointed not to have found the one this time around, the former Dancing On Ice star said it hasn’t put her off and she’s already back on the dating apps – though she insisted that she’s ‘happy with herself’ and ‘OK’ on her own.

‘I’m back out there! I’m on the dating apps’, she revealed. ‘I think initially it knocked my confidence a bit. You go through that feeling of like “oh I’m not going to meet anyone”, certainly not anyone normal because who is going to able to handle it?

‘But then I just thought, do you know what? I just met someone that couldn’t, that doesn’t mean that everyone can’t. And it’s just fun and lovely. I think what’s nice for me is, I’m OK on my own. I’m happy anyway.

‘Would it be nice to share a life with someone? Of course it would. But, it wouldn’t be the be all and end all if it doesn’t happen as I’m happy with myself and what I’ve got. I guess that’s a nicer way to be rather than be desperate because I need somebody.

‘So if I find somebody, it’s because I really like them and I really want to be with them, not because I feel I have to be and I think that’s a nicer way to be really.’

Coleen, who has previously been married to Ray Fensome and Shane Richie, went on to share her thoughts on ‘starting again’ and dating younger men following her short-lived dalliance with the mystery guy who was eight years younger than herself.

She said: ‘The only thing I hated when I finished with this guy, with anything, it’s like urgh, I’ve got to do it all again now! But I think in this day and age, it’s the only way you can meet really, certainly in the industry I’m in!

‘People say you must meet loads of people and I say “I do! And they are either 18, gay or married!” I don’t really meet anyone in the industry I’m in!’

She went on: ‘The guy I was talking to was 47/48 and I’m 56 and I was like “you might be a bit young for me” and he was like “Jesus Christ I’m only 8 years younger!” But imagine if I was meeting someone who was 20, well I just couldn’t!

‘I’ve always said I won’t date someone who I could’ve given birth to! That’s my motto. My eldest is 32, so going out with someone the same age or younger, I’d just feel like I’d adopted a new child!’

Difficult: Speaking about the difficulty of being in a private relationship while in the public eye, she went on: 'As soon as you say you’ve met someone, everyone wants to get the first picture'

One thing’s for sure, Coleen insisted that whoever she dates next ‘better like bingo’, as she also shared her love for the game and her family connection to it, citing this as a reason she got involved with Buzz Bingo.

Coleen, who was enlisted to help Buzz Bingo employees get their voices on top form ahead of the 91 UK clubs re-opening on Monday, explained: ‘Of course I was absolutely thrilled to help out because bingo has played such a major part in my life.

‘My mum was an avid bingo player, she would’ve gone every day if she could, but certainly once or twice a week, she loved it. Me and my sisters got really into over the years, it used to be our Sunday nights together going out to bingo.’

When asked by Buzz Bingo if she’ll support colleagues as they prepare for the big day, she said: ‘I was like “yes, I’ll do it!” I think it’s all fabulous that it’s all coming back anyway, it’s such a social occasion.

Age difference: Coleen admitted, 'My eldest is 32, so going out with someone the same age or younger, I’d just feel like I’d adopted a new child!'

‘Even with me and my family, it was never about the gambling side of it at all, it was more of the social, great fun you had. They’ve had all these caller presenters out of work for over a year and with me being a singer, it’s like right, let’s get those vocal cords ready for lots of calling, shouting and entertaining!’

On how she feels herself about getting back to reality, she said: ‘Like everyone it will take a while, but over time, the more things that open and the more things you can do, it will get easier. But I do think it will be a few months really.

‘I’m not ready to really go abroad or anything. I haven’t got time to be honest and of course now that I can work, I need to bloody work! I ain’t time for a holiday, I’ve been on a holiday for a year!

‘I don’t think I’m ready for that yet anyway, even if I did have the time. But I’m really looking forward to Monday when I’m there calling out the first game! And I’ve always wanted to do that anyway! ‘

The TV personality, who also features in a hilarious video which sees her training Buzz presenters to help them to rediscover their voice, added of the training session: ‘We just had so much fun.

‘We did lots of breathing exercises and mouth exercises to loosen everything up. It was such good fun and they were all so excited and so up for it and I had a lovely day with them all. ‘

In a statement, she also said: ‘I know how nerve-wracking it can be standing up there and entertaining a room full of people. Believe me, it never gets any easier, but after almost a year of little to no socialising in large groups, it’s going to be ten times scarier.

‘We had so much fun practicing our calls together – so much so that I’m going to be hosting my very own game in Buzz Bingo’s Fenton Club on the 17th of May – opening night!’
