Scottish grandmother, 82, is given £60 ‘anti-social’ Covid fine

An 82-year-old grandmother has been slapped with a £60 fine for attending a lockdown-breaching 70th birthday party.

Maureen Hogg, from Eaglesham, East Renfrewshire, was given the notice for antisocial behaviour after police broke up the celebration.

All attendees of the party in Eaglesham had both doses of the Covid-19 jab – but each one received a fine for £60.

Under Scotland’s lockdown rules, groups of up to four from no more than two households can meet outdoors – regardless of someone’s vaccine status.

But the party attended by Mrs Hogg was held indoors.

When police came to disperse the group, she was handed a notice under the Antisocial Behaviour Act of 2004.

Ms Hogg’s granddaughter Daisy Hogg shared a picture of her grandmother’s fine to Twitter, writing: ‘Howling that my 82-year-old Gran got a Covid fine cause she got caught at a gaff for someone’s 70th.

‘Taken home by the police and everything, she is who I aspire to be like at 82.’

Daisy later added: ‘I hope I’m partying like her at that age.’

‘I thought it was funny, my Mum and Dad did too.’

Every party attendee had received two doses of a coronavirus vaccine. Even so, all received fines of £60 for their ‘antisocial behaviour’, Daisy said.

A shocked Daisy replied to the message saying: ‘Seriously.’

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘We were called around 9pm on Sunday, 11 April, 2021 following a reported breach of coronavirus regulations at a property on Kirkton Drive, Eaglesham.

‘Officers attended, spoke to those involved and seven fixed penalty notices were issued.’
