Line Of Duty SPOILER: DCS Patricia Carmichael is RETURNING to the show

Line Of Duty’s series five scene-stealer DCS Patricia Carmichael is set to return to the BBC drama.

DCS Carmichael, played by BAFTA award winner Anna Maxwell Martin, will appear from Sunday’s episode of the police show.

Fans will remember the experienced anti-corruption officer from the previous series, when she was brought in as an independent investigator from AC-3 after suspicions mounted over the integrity of Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar).

Little is known about her return to the show, but it coincides with Superintendent Hastings’ forced retirement, suggesting she is looking to oversee the new restructure of the anti-corruption units.

Although she works in anti-corruption, there has also been speculation that DCS Carmichael could be the elusive fourth ‘H’.

While she appeared excellent at her job interrogating Superintendent Hastings last season, some fans have suggested this was merely to steer any focus away from herself.

Keeping tight-lipped on any details, Anna said of her character’s return: ‘Pat’s back, I can’t remember what she’s doing there, nor would I be allowed to blab, but suffice to say she’s got some new clobber and she’s ready to bust some balls.’

LINE OF DUTY: WHO IS THE FOURTH ‘H’?

Line Of Duty creator Jed Mercurio excited fans when he shared the first clue about the plot of season six to Twitter.

Uploading a snap of a packet of the Australian chocolate biscuits TimTams with the caption ‘#LineofDuty Series 6 Plot Clue No. 1’, fans began to ferociously speculate as to what it might mean.

But one plot point hanging over the next season of the show is about the identity of the ominous ‘H’.

While the mystery was somewhat answered in the season five finale, it was also revealed that there are FOUR people pertaining to be ‘H’, with the final one still unknown.

So who could it be?

Patricia Carmichael (Anna Maxwell Martin)

She was one of season five’s stand-out characters, swooping in towards the end of the series to interrogate Ted Hastings – highly suspected to be ‘H’ at the time.

And while she simply seemed to be excellent at her job – and hellbent on uncovering the corruption within the department – could it be that Patricia Carmichael was SO keen to pin the blame on Ted to take the focus away from herself.

Could SHE be the fourth ‘H’?

Her position of power and respect, along with her unnaturally steely and cut-throat demeanor, could well point to this.

Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar)

Ted Hastings was pinpointed by viewers of the show, as well as the characters on the show, to be a candidate for ‘H’.

But it seemed he was exonerated by the end of season five, allowed to walk free.

But could be potentially be triple-crossing us all? Could he in fact STILL be the potential fourth ‘H’.

The biggest issue with this theory is that Gill Biggeloe – one of the three revealed to be ‘H’ – was so against him. Surely she wouldn’t be working to deter him if they were in league?

UNLESS, she doesn’t KNOW he is the fourth ‘H’?

DCC Andrea Wise (Elizabeth Rider)

Detective Chief Constable Andrea Wise was new to the show in season five and is another high-powered contender for ‘H’.

She has been constantly interfering when it has come to supporting AC-12’s investigations, removing them from the investigation into Operation Pear Tree. She also instigated the Ted Hastings investigation.

She is also keen to cover up police corruption, despite announcing at the end of season five: ‘This constabulary will work tirelessly to root out rotten apples in its ranks.’

PCC Rohan Sindwhani (Ace Bhatti)

Police and Crime Commissioner Rohan Sindwhani demanded to be ‘in on’ a meeting between Andrea Wise and Ted Hastings. This might be a small clue but any clue could be valid at this point.

Any shady behavior suggests ‘H’ is at play, and so Rohan could indeed be culpable.

Her return will hopefully coincide with the answer to a question everyone has been waiting to hear – who is DCI Jo Davidson’s criminal blood relative?

A major cliffhanger at the end of Sunday’s episode revealed that Jo had a DNA match with someone on the police database after a swab was retrieved from he ex-girlfriend PS Farida Jatri’s (Anneika Rose) home.

And fans believe they have already worked out who the connection is ahead of the next episode, with many convinced former OCG boss Tommy Hunter is her father.

Viewers of the addictive police drama have suggested Jo (Kelly Macdonald) and Tommy could be linked and that she is being blackmailed over the information.

Many fans pointed out that there is no way to be sure that Tommy (Brian McCardle) actually ever died because his body was wrapped in bandages during series two.

Viewers took to Twitter following the tense episode to share their theories over how Jo is related to the late crime leader.

One said: ‘Jo Davidson’s blood relative? Tommy Hunter her father is my guess!’

Another said: ‘So many links to S1 of #LineOfDuty in S6, the shooting of Karim Ali from back in episode 1 of S1 is what the interview is about…

‘Jackie Laverty referenced in earlier episodes, Chloe could be Tony Gates’ daughter, it’s all coming together for Tommy Hunter being Jo Davidson’s dad.’

Another theorised: ‘Steve said “he” so I’m going with Jo is related to Tommy Hunter, it can’t be a copper as would be on the database and all the other dead ones were coppers.’

While another picked up on Jo’s accent and said: ‘I reckon she’s Tommy Hunter’s daughter – both Scottish? I think he’s his daughter!’

Another said: ‘Either Dryden or Tommy Hunter – both Scottish.’

AI think Jo is related to Tommy Hunter. I don’t think it was him that was killed in the hospital in series 2, after all he was covered in bandages, like the invisible man, so could have been anyone.

In agreement, another added: ‘I reckon Jo Davidson is Tommy Hunter’s daughter!’

While another concurred, and said: ‘Going to agree with general consensus that Jo is linked to Corbett’s mum but wonder if Tommy Hunter was dad?

‘Then she is legacy OGC and can sort Ryan out.’

Others were also on the same wavelength and said: ‘I reckon Tommy Hunter is Jo’s biological father.

While they believed Jo is Tommy’s daughter, then also added that Ryan could be her brother.

A Twitter user wrote: ‘I think Jo’s related to Tommy Hunter and that it ties everything back to series one but I’m also thinking she is related to Ryan. What if Ryan was Tommy’s son.’

Another person noted that Jo’s connection wasn’t on the police database but the criminal one, suggesting her relative was a convicted criminal.

They said: ‘If the relationship was between Jo Davidson and John Corbett then he would be on the police DNA database and not the criminal one as he died in the Line Of Duty.’

Another added: ‘Whoever it is they’re on the criminal DNA database, my money’s on Tommy Hunter – though he may be too obvious.’

Many surmised that it could mean Tommy is still alive, with one person writing: ‘I reckon Tommy Hunter [is the father].

‘Both him and Jo are Scottish and he is still alive…’

Another theorised: ‘Tommy Hunter is still alive. The ambush in S2 was a set up. That’s my theory and I’m sticking with it.’

A third agreed and said: ‘So Tommy Hunter and Jo are related. He must be still alive then????’

Tommy’s name was most recently brought up to John Corbett – who is now dead – by Lisa McQueen in the second episode of series five.

She told Corbett that Hunter was the leader of the OCG before he was a part of the sydicate.

While head of the OCG, Tommy groomed Matthew ‘Dot’ Cottan as a teenager, before encouraging him to join the police as a mole for the crime gang.

Viewers will remember that he also has links to Ryan Pilkington, who worked for him as a juvenile delinquent.

Tommy was ‘killed off’ during series two after being ambushed while being moved into witness protection and then later murdered in hospital.

During the fourth episode AC-12 found that Jo had indeed been at Farida’s property, despite denying any personal relation with the Police Sergeant in the past, after they discovered her DNA.

But as the latest instalment came to a close, DI Steve Arnott informed Superintendent Ted Hastings that there was another DNA match to Davidson – a mystery blood relative.

While Hastings was seen learning the identity of the mystery figure, uttering his favourite catchphrase ‘mother of God!’ at the revelation, viewers were left having to wait for next week’s episode.

While many believed the match to be Tommy, this didn’t stop a slew of other theories from spilling onto Twitter.

Someone else theorized: ‘Who is Jo Davidson related to? My guesses: John Corbett (and therefore possibly Hastings), Derek Hilton, Mike Dryden!’

Another penned: ‘I’ve got my theory. I reckon Jo Davidson’s blood relative is Superintendent Powell from Season 5. Scottish accent, Corbett’s boss in a clandestine unit. Would be in line for promotion to Chief Super in a new Anti Corruption Unit!’

‘My theory – the DNA that flagged on the nominal database was either Corbett’s (police files removed when deep undercover) OR Ted’s (older police officer so DNA not on system and was cautioned once) so Jo is Ted’s daughter, Anne Marie is her mum!’ someone else wrote.

‘I’m thinking DCC Wise,’ came another theory, followed by someone else tweeting: ‘Partial detection to a nominal. That would mean Laverty, Hunter, Roach, Biggeloe, Lakewell are the ones to narrow it down to.’

The overriding theories suggested that Davidson’s relative was either Tommy Hunter, of series one and two, Mike Dryden of series two, John Corbett of series five, or Derek Hilton, killed off in series four.

Line Of Duty continues Sunday at 9PM on BBC One.

LINE OF DUTY SEASON SIX: WHAT ARE THE MAIN FAN THEORIES?

Season six of Line Of Duty has left fans with more questions than answers, with viewers flocking to Twitter to question what exactly is DCI Jo Davidson is up to, whether Kate Fleming has really left AC-12 and who is H?

Here, MailOnline examines some of the most prominent fan theories

Kate Fleming HASN’T left AC-12 and is working undercover

One of the most shocking discoveries was AC-12’s Kate is now working with a new team- with some fans suggesting she could even be the infamous H.

While chatting to her new gaffer DCI Davidson, Kate said: ‘I got fed upon nicking coppers, I’d rather go after the psycho who murdered Gail [Vella].’

But despite seeming confident in her new role, some viewers were left wondering if all was at it seems and theorised that Kate could still be undercover for AC-12.

Even after she tipped off Davidson and incurred the wrath of Ted Hastings, fans have continued to speculate that she is so deep undercover that even Hastings is having to keep her true agenda secret.

DCI Jo Davidson is being blackmailed by an Organised Crime Group

Jo has already survived a grilling from AC-12’s top team and appeared to clear her name when it was ex-girlfriend PS Farida Jatri who seemed to have taken part in corruption.

However, Jo was seen hitching a ride with known bent copper Ryan Pilkington and taken to collect a burner phone, making her look suspicious once more.

Fans, however, are convinced the DCI is being blackmailed by an OCG, following her emotional outburst when she was summoned to pick up a new burner.

DCI Jo Davidson’s mother is Anne-Marie McGillis

Fans speculated over who Jo’s mother could be after she was seen in a photograph in the first episode.

Many theorised her mother has something to do with season five character John Corbett’s [Stephen Graham] mother Anne-Marie McGillis, who was killed by an Irish Republican paramilitary group sometime after 1989.

Gail Vella is still alive

Although season six has centered around the murder of journalist Gail Vella, one obscure theory is that she is in fact still alive.

Craig Parkinson, who played Matthew ‘Dot’ Cottan in the show, said on BBC Sounds podcast Obsessed with Line of Duty: ‘Somebody is in that flat and there’s some connection with Gail Vella, the investigative journalist.

‘You don’t cast someone like Andi Osho and then just have her as little magazine prints and stick them up on a kitchen wall.’

Sarah Millican – who also appeared on the podcast – went on to suggest Vella may have been a former lover of DCI Davidson’s.

DC Chloe Bishop is Tony Gates’ daughter

Bishop is one of AC-12’s newest recruits, and as Gates and his wife Jools had two daughters, Natalie and Chloe, viewers have suggested their shared first name ‘can’t be a coincidence’.

Gates’ daughter was last seen in season one in 2012, which means she’d be roughly the same age as Bishop is now.

Fans have suggested that Bishop either took her mother’s maiden name or the name of a step-father, so that her true identity remains a secret – for now.

Gates died at the end of the first season when he walked into a busy road after getting a confession from gang leader Tommy Hunter, who had been blackmailing the police officer into covering up their criminal activity.

Bent copper Ryan Pilkington is actually a honest policeman

Ryan first appeared in the show’s first season as a teenage foul-mouthed messenger for the criminal gang working with bent copper DCI Gates.

His escapades on the show have taken an even darker turn in past seasons, as he attempted to cut DS Arnott’s fingers off with bolt cutters, and also killed undercover cop DS Corbett.

However, the show creator’s Jed Mercurio teased the possibility that Ryan has ‘turned a new leaf’ and isn’t a spy in the Central Police, despite what fans may think of his criminal past.

Jed claimed: ‘Now that Ryan’s a police officer, viewers will have to wait and see if he has turned over a new leaf or if he remains a dangerous inside man for organised crime.’

DCI Jo Davidson’s mystery blood relative is…?

After it was revealed that Jo’s DNA matched someone on the Police National Computer, fans theorized who that could be.

The overriding theories suggested that Davidson’s relative was either Tommy Hunter, of series one and two, Mike Dryden of series two, John Corbett of series five, or Derek Hilton, killed off in series four.

Tommy Hunter was the leader of the OCG in earlier series of the show, and a paedophile. His character is dead.

Mike Dryden, the former Deputy Chief Constable, was last seen resigning from his post for perverting the course of justice in series two. His Scottish links also suggest he could be related to Davidson.

John Corbett was an undercover cop in series five who had his throat slit, leaving behind a wife, two daughters, and a mysterious link to a woman, Anne-Marie, whom fans claim could also be Davidson’s mother.

Derek Hilton was a Chief Superintendent and later the Assistant Chief Constable of Central Police. He was also secretly affiliated with organised crime. He was shot in the mouth in a staged suicide in season four.

Other suggestions were Gill Biggeloe, Jackie Laverty, Lindsay Denton or Terry Boyle.
