She told the UN Commission on the Status of Women that it is a marker of a ‘flawed democracy’ when women are kept out of decision-making.
Harris, a leading presidential contender for 2024 or 228, told the group in a virtual appearance at its annual meeting that providing women a voice ‘strengthens democracy.’

‘The status of democracy also depends fundamentally on the empowerment of women,’ she said. ‘Not only because the exclusion of women in decision-making is a marker of a flawed democracy, but because the participation of women strengthens democracy. And that’s true everywhere,’ she added.
Her comments kicked off a day where she joined her husband – the nation’s first gentleman Doug Emhoff – for West Coast events that promote vaccination and the coronavirus relief package.
Her schedule was meant to reinforce President Joe Biden’s efforts as he flew to Pennsylvania to tout the new $1.9 trillion coronavirus law.
She and her husband toured Maria Empanada in Denver, touting small business who have struggled during the pandemic.

“Our small businesses are really part of the heartbeat of every community, our small business leaders are not only business leaders, you are civic leaders, community leaders, role models,’ she said.
‘It is our small businesses that hire from the community, that uplift the community, that have regular customers who come in and you can recognize if they’re having a bad day and you already know what they want to they don’t even have to put in an order.’
Earlier, at the Denver airport, she greeted another boundary breakder: Democratic Gov. Jared Polis, who became the first openly gay person elected governor in 2018.
Harris and Emhoff flew to Las Vegas on Monday as part of a tour meant to tout the coronavirus relief package.
