PLATELL’S PEOPLE: What happened to Clegg’s moral principles as he stays silent over Facebook row?

Facebook likes to be seen as a forum for ordinary folk across the world to connect with each other, for free.

Nice smiley selfies on holiday to show your family, wherever you are. A place to connect with friends, with lovers past and present.

Yet today it is embroiled in a furious global row after Australia, the first country brave enough to take on this tax-avoiding titan, demanded it must pay for the news it cannibalises for free from other media outlets.

Facebook’s response was a declaration of war. It banned all news-feeds Down Under, to the despair of millions of its users in that little country. So much for the ordinary folk!

Yet we have heard not a word about these corporate bully-boy tactics from the company’s Vice-President of Global Affairs and Communications.

A man whose high moral tone we came to know rather too well over the years when he was Deputy Prime Minister in the Tory-led coalition.

Perish the thought that Sir Nick Clegg — for it is he — should stir from his £7 million mansion in the California sun or jeopardise his £1 million-plus salary to stick up for the downtrodden of Oz today, as they are threatened and bullied by Facebook.

Failing to do so, I’m afraid, is not a good look for someone who rammed his moral principles and support for the underdog down our throats so tediously when he was Lib Dem leader. Where are those principles and that support today, you might ask?

We should hardly be surprised. Sir Nick is only following the money, like so many other high-minded, sanctimonious Lefties.

Remember how David Miliband, a contender for the Labour leadership before his brother Ed stabbed him in the back, ran off to the U.S. to become CEO of the International Rescue Committee?

He’s on a package of more than £700,000 — not bad for the boss of a not-for-profit!

And what about Tony Blair, earning squillions for travelling the world (before Covid) making speeches and advising dictators?

MPs are calling for Sir Nick Smug to consider his position at Facebook. Julian Knight, Tory chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, has accused the company of ‘running a bulldozer’ over democratic processes.

The very processes Sir Nick used to hold so dear. How does he sleep at night?

Bully Barnett went too far

Just weeks into her role replacing the inestimable Jenni Murray on Woman’s Hour, more than 100 public figures have objected to the way Emma Barnett harangued the first woman and the youngest person to lead the Muslim Council of Britain, Zara Mohammed.

I now add my name to that list.

Barnett demanded four times that Mohammed told us the number of female imams in the country, knowing it was almost nil, and interrupting her during each answer.

It was an object lesson in bullying and religious intolerance unworthy of the BBC.

Cressie thought Harry was scrummy

Perhaps rugby-lover Harry will miss being patron of the RFU almost as much as his military titles.

He celebrated England’s 2003 World Cup win in Australia with the squad, and was friends with former captain Dylan Hartley and James Haskell, who was a guest at his wedding.

But Megs won’t mind he’s lost the patronage. One of the happiest sights of Harry was this day he was in the stands at Twickenham with his then girlfriend, the discreet Cressida Bonas, now happily married to someone else.

England were playing Wales and won, but Cressie had no interest in the match — she only had eyes for her Prince.

Supermodel Cara Delevingne’s £45.5 million family property company, of which she is a director, has taken Government cash to furlough staff.

Earning £15.7 million last year alone, she should hang her head in shame. Furlough was meant for the needy, not desperately needy attention-seekers.

Cover up Kate

Weeping into her £50 million fortune, Kate Moss, 47, now says she felt ‘terribly uncomfortable’ being asked to do naked photo shoots during her three-decade career as one of the highest paid models in the world.

It may have been questionable when she was first snapped scantily clad at 14, yet she had every chance as an adult to cover up and chose not to.

And as she knew the industry was so venal, perhaps she could have dissuaded her daughter Lila Grace from entering it?

The man awaiting trial for trolling Captain Tom after he died has apparently been named and shamed.

Causing untold pain to the Moore family, the Scot is said to have tweeted: ‘The only good Brit soldier is a deed one, burn auld fella, buuuuurn.’

Let whoever wrote it burn in the eternal hellfire of social media he already inhabits.

As Anne Robinson is crowned new Countdown host, Vanessa Feltz accuses her of a ‘racist jibe’ on Celebrity Weakest Link in 2006.

She says Robinson asked her: ‘Looking the way you do, how do you think you land all these big black boyfriends?’

Fair enough for Vanessa to take offence. Yet I recall when I met her in those days that she regaled us all with fruity stories about her hot boyfriend, who we wouldn’t have known was black — if she hadn’t told us.

Cameron Diaz has found ‘peace in her soul’ after turning her back on Hollywood two years ago to raise her child.

She says you can’t be a mother and work 14 hours a day making movies. That takes guts to admit in La La Land.

 Westminster Wars

  • After seven nail-biting months of meticulous planning, we hear the joyous news of a sensational development in the mission to prove there is life — no, not on Mars, but in the Labour leadership. Keir Starmer’s relaunch speech, however, was a bumpy landing. A robotic performance that could be summed up by Star Trek’s Dr ‘Bones’ McCoy: ‘It’s life Jim, but not as we know it.’
  • In THE scene dubbed Dilyn’s Watergate, Carrie Symonds’s mutt cocked a leg on the handbag of a senior adviser in No 10 who was loyal to Dominic Cummings, a man widely seen as deposed by Carrie. That’s what you call a real political leak.
  • Boris vows to give surplus vaccines to poorer countries once the UK rollout is complete. Excellent, as long as the cost comes from our £10 billion foreign aid budget.
  • Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is mocked for putting a broom up against the door handle of his study to keep his children out while he Zoomed. I thought it was actually quite cute.

 Whiley wise advice

After her sister Frances, who has learning difficulties and lives in a care home, caught Covid, BBC Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley said if there was one thing she has learned it is to ‘get yourself an oximeter’.

That’s the little device you put on your finger that detects dangerously low oxygen levels, an indicator of Covid.

Sage advice, I have already bought one for myself and six others for my nearest and dearest.

Prayers for her sister Frances, and all who now are fighting this horrible virus.

Now that Meghan and Harry are fully estranged from the Royal Family, they will surely have more time to make amends with her father, Thomas.

When he heard Meghan was pregnant again, he pleaded for the chance to see his grandson Archie — never having set eyes on him though he is nearly two.

Nor has he met Harry, despite living only 250 miles away. While full of the joys of motherhood, Meghan may do well to remember the universal truth that no relationship is more profound than that between dad and daughter.

I hope she realises that before it’s too late.
