Victoria’s Covid outbreak could have spread across Australia after Melbourne Airport café exposed

A staff member worked a shift at a busy cafe at Melbourne Airport while infected with Covid-19 – raising fears Victoria’s coronavirus outbreak may already have spread across Australia.

In response Premier Daniel Andrews has announced a five day lockdown across the entire state of Victoria from 11.59pm on February 12.

State health officials said early on Friday morning customers and staff at Terminal 4’s Brunetti cafe may have been at risk at any time between 4.45am and 1.15pm on February 9.

Anyone who was at the cafe during that nine-hour window must get tested and remain isolated for 14 days regardless of the result.

About 3,591 passengers from 29 different flights traveled through the airport during this window.

The New South Wales government has also declared this an exposure site and said anyone in NSW who was at Melbourne Airport, Terminal 4 from 4:45am – 2pm on February 9 needs to isolate for 14 days, get tested, and keep isolating regardless of the result.

Those who were there on February 7 and 8 will also need to isolate until they get a negative test result.

Terminal 4 is one of the busiest transport hubs in the country – with passengers travelling to Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth every day on Jetstar flights.

The exposure comes as a further two infections were linked to the Melbourne Airport Holiday Inn cluster on Thursday night – bringing the outbreak to 13 cases.

Under the state’s five day lockdown, residents will be required to remain in the houses unless for essential reasons.

Masks must also be worn in public.

Mr Andrews said the new strain of the virus was ‘moving at a velocity we have not seen before’ and the state required a ‘circuit-breaker’ to get on top of the virus.

Brunetti is among 29 venues listed as ‘tier 1’ sites for potential Covid-19 exposure.

Three other Covid-19 cases were linked to the outbreak earlier in the day – one of whom is believed to be an assistant manager at the hotel.

The sudden outbreak has prompted Premier Daniel Andrews to hold heated crisis talks with health chiefs on Thursday night about plans to send Victoria back into a hard lockdown for a third time.

The road map state government advisers have been instructed to draw up would spell an end to crowds at the Australian Open.

South Australia has already closed their border to residents of greater Melbourne as of Thursday in response to the hotel outbreak.

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said police have been deployed to regional checkpoints to enforce the border closure.

He also said officials were attempting to track down anyone that had already traveled across the border that might have been to the affected areas.

‘Our SA Health experts are reaching out to anybody who might have been in one of the affected zones and particularly the hotel itself. We’re making contact with those people.’

‘But we’re also taking a precautionary step by putting this border restriction in place until we know exactly what’s going on in Melbourne.’

People from Greater Melbourne who travel to South Australia must get tested on day one, five, and twelve and isolate for 14 days. Regional Victoria is not affected.

Queenslanders are meanwhile being warned to reconsider travelling to Melbourne as the state prepares to shut its border to travellers from the Victorian capital’s coronavirus risk zones.

The Queensland government will bar entry to anyone who has been to Melbourne’s 29 exposure sites from 1am on Saturday.

Acting Chief Health Officer Sonya Bennett says Queenslanders should reconsider visiting Melbourne altogether.

‘If the situation takes a turn for the worst, we may need to act, so I continue to ask Queenslanders to reconsider the need to travel to Victoria,’ she said.

‘If you do decide to go, I recommend you have plans in place to get back to Queensland quickly.’
