will.i.am has revealed how he initially thought
Speaking exclusively to FEMAIL about his new investment in CBD brand VAAY,
The Grammy-awarding winning producer and businessman said that there’s a ‘huge dark cloud over the world right now’ as he revealed how he lost five close friends and family to the virus in January.
‘Post Covid we’re gonna want to live longer. This time last year “I was like, all these people were passing away”. I don’t know anybody that has Covid.
‘I don’t know anybody that passed away, I was starting to believe it was a hoax and then it hit me in my core,’ he said.
‘Folks that I know people that that I work with [started to catch it], drivers that drive me, people that will make music with me. Like my keyboard player and drummer. F***, he got hit hard with it,’ he added.
will.i.am has revealed how he initially thought Covid-19 was a hoax until some of his friends began to catch it and die. He is pictured in LA in April last year
‘So, after Covid, what does the world look like? I hope I pray, a little bit more health conscious, a little bit more conscious on wellness and sustaining life, preventing and preventive care.
‘What’s preventive care? That’s eating right and working out. When you work out. You need to recover. When you’re recovering. You got to take the me time.
‘In January, My best friend lost her dad and her grandma. In the same week.
‘My other best friend, lost his aunt, and his uncle, all in the same week. I lost my second grandma, four days after. .
‘And then our, our cinematographer that does all of our recording caught Covid. The masseuse we had caught Covid.
‘The majority of folks that caught it, and passed away, had diabetes, were a little overweight and had health conditions like they smoked a lot.
‘Some of them were in and out of the hospital for like bronchitis or asthma.
‘So we’re gonna care more about our, our wellness. ‘

WHAT IS CBD AND IS IT LEGAL IN THE UK?
CBD oil is a legal cannabinoid that can be sold in the UK as it doesn’t contains psychoactive substance THC.
Although the oil has been thought to have some medicinal properties, including relieving inflammation, pain and anxiety, there is no conclusive science.
Manufacturers are able to avoid the strict regulation by selling it as a food supplement – ignoring the lengthy process of gaining a medicinal licence.
As a result it’s become a huge health trend in recent years, with shelves filling up with the likes of CBD coffee, kombucha and beauty products. It’s even available in the likes of gin, hummus and ice-cream.
CBD products comes in many forms, the most popular being an oil – which users spray under their tongue – or gel tablets which melt slowly in the mouth.
Government advisers at the MHRA found that CBD has a ‘restoring, correcting or modifying’ effect on humans.
Speaking to FEMAIL will.i.am added he was keen to invest in the company as he regularly uses their products and sees wellness as the future.
The producer said the company’s bath bomb and the active muscle gel are his favourite products for after he works out and that the products have helped him in lockdown.
‘Let’s just take a snapshot of right now, the world right now,’ he said.
‘So, if you were to tell anyone at the coffee shop at the bar at the pub at the club in the subway in 2019 that in 2020 no one’s going anywhere. You have to stay in your house and clubs are closed, and football games are closed, and you’d be like “what”.
‘There’s no way they’re gonna shut down every single state, every single country.
‘You’d say “Get the hell out of here there’s no way that’s going to happen”. And “Why are they going to do that? A terrorist attack?”
‘”Oh no no no no no. It’s because of a different versions of the flu. And this is going to be like this pandemic”.
‘We’re watching the impossible and only happens to the movements. That’s shutting everything down everything down everything.
‘Look at right now. The whole world has been put on pause and we realise just how fragile, the world is all in the name of wellness and staying healthy.
‘The results of what we are living through right now is going to be a more conscious society.
‘But what we put in our bodies, what we put in our environment. I hope that’s my hope.
‘What we would hate to happen if people are just like, whatever. And then they enter the world on some rambunctiousness. And then we are back here where we are now, because we got sick quick?’ he continued.
The Grammy award-winning star says that he ‘prays’ people will look after themselves in the future as the pandemic begins to clear.
How will.i.am became an investor in VAAY CBD
As well as VAAY, will.i.am has been a long time investor in startups and brands.
He met Vaay’s founder Finn Age Hänsel though a colleague when he was working with fellow mogul Dr Dre to launched Beats headphones in Europe.
When will.i.am went on a health kick, started a vegan diet and working out and losing weight their mutual friend introduced him to VAAY.
‘There’s no king brand yet, when it comes to wellness,’ he told FEMAIL.
‘And you should probably check them out and that’s something I’m going to invest in here check out these products. So then I tried the product, the bath bomb.
‘And the massage oil. When I go for my treatments I had no one black eyed peas were recording, we had the misuse that we had to try this out,’ he said.
‘And then the topical stuff that I could put on myself every day the act of CBD gel.
‘And I saw how it transformed my recovery from working out.
‘And from that point, I get it, I get a chance, I have a chance to invest in some in a product that I like.
‘This is, this is freaking awesome. And yes, every product you invest in you should like daily use. You know, usually for me I usually invest in things that haven’t come out yet.
will.i.am, who previously invested in Tesla, Pinterest, and Twitter, added: ‘There’s something different. When a small team comes together to solve a problem that big corporations have forgotten.
‘Right. It’s the reason why Twitter’s Twitter. There were a small group of people. Jack Dorsey with a small group of people that came together and solved the problem that traditional media didn’t allow you to do something about a small team.
‘That changes the way you look at things, you know, Tesla was one of those small little groups of people that came together and solve the big problem. around, you know, energy, travel efficiency and kinder to the planet. Look what they’ve done. I think buys one of those things. One of those companies that are solving a problem with that microscope, thinking of people, and they’re not caught up into like shareholders and like, you know, something’s gonna fall through the cracks.
‘And when you only thinking about shareholders you’re gonna miss these, you know, small little things Jessica Alba was one of those people that had a small team they did an awesome job on his product and the giants, they forgot about, people.
‘When you’re so big you do forget. And that’s what I like about bi they’re, they’re small, but they’re doing big things, and making awesome products to bring ease to our lives.
VAAY is the latest in a long line of investments for will.i.am, who also juggles a music career with judging on The Voice UK, Australia and The Voice Kids.
He also has his own fashion business and foundation, but says that the pandemic has helped him to slow down and look after his health.
‘I was a Go Go Go Bro. Not a bro dancing in the Go-go, the other way. I was a go, go, bro. I was always on the go and it’s cool to take it slow. We’re just ordinary people,’ Will added, referencing the John Legend song he co-wrote and produced.
The Black Eyed Peas founder added that his inspiration in keeping busy is his grandmother, who lived through both World Wars and the Civil Rights Movement.
‘There’s a big dark cloud over the entire world. And, you know, I just think about my grandma. And the times that she experienced and overcome.
‘She was she lived through World War One and Two. She was born around World War One but when they were fighting World War Two. She was of age, she saw that, and then civil rights movement.
‘Into the 2000 there was a couple of pandemics that happened was one in America and 1970, or something like that.
‘I just think about, you know, the vaccines that were that my grandma went through the door and certain types of booster shots.
‘My brother has a booster shot mark on his arm because he was born in the ’60s and everybody at that point in time, had a mandatory get a shot.
‘We’ve been through this. We’ve been through some version of this in the past, and it will pass.
Discussing his love for CBD, Will added that he would urge people to do ‘proper research’ into it before dismissing it for coming from the same plant as marijuana.
‘Just learn about, you know, all the things that can come out of that wonderful plant.
‘I don’t smoke marijuana, but that particular plant has so many different strains that have wonderful, magical components to it that that is helpful like I am is pretty strong fabric
‘To say that the plant is only for one thing – that that’s pretty ignorant.
‘We can take one thing from nature and make five different things from it, hundreds of different things from it.
‘The same as for, you know, that magical plant.
‘And, yeah, and CBD is one of those things that a magical ingredient that comes from that plant that that calms you and give brings you help a lot helps you recover better.
‘Imagine if red wine was illegal.
‘Right. And then somebody’s like “would you like some jam?”
‘You’d say ‘”re you serious, you’re gonna put that jam on your bread? Do you know that that’s what makes it red wine?”
‘”Yeah, it’s different though it’s different than a favourite though it’s not the same s***”.
”No, but it’s the same thing you’re gonna drink. You’re gonna put the same stuff that got my uncle into an alcoholic.
‘On your bread and smear it yeah no no it’s the same thing.
‘It’s different. How do you know, can you just try this freaking jam and Bradley’s.
‘It’s two totally different things the same way.
‘But you know, one has, you know, remedies for one has magical remedies and that allow you to recover from stress muscles, help you sleep better.
‘And the other one will get you, you know, tipsy or faded, or we’re not talking about that time. It’s, you know, wine and jam.
Will is pictured performing with the Black Eyed Peas in August 2020 in New York, as well as his work in music he is an investor
The producer said the company’s bath bomb and the active muscle gel are his favourite products for after he works out.
Finn Age Hänsel, CEO and founder of the brand added: ‘The cannabis plant itself, has so many active ingredients. Will mentioned you can also use it for fibre.
‘When people talk about when they talk about smoking weed and getting high, they’re talking about THC, which is only just a tiny bit of this plant.
‘You have so many other things in there and that’s what I always hear when people say like yeah but it’s cannabis at the end is like yeah but what you talk about is one ingredient of the cannabis plant that’s THC.
‘What I’m talking about is the 99 other ingredients that can actually he does so much good for your body and your well being.
‘And that’s actually something I think is research is showing that I mean there’s so many studies out there.
‘Schizophrenic patients become pharmaceuticals based on CBD, and they’re definitely not getting high up and taking that so I think actually.
will.i.am’s daily wellness routine
Speaking to FEMAIL, will.i.am explained the importance of taking time out of the day to focus on himself, and how he has at least 30 minutes every morning before he looks at his phone.
‘My daily wellness routine is wake up in the morning.
‘I start my day. I lay in bed just to gather myself, have my hot water and lemon.
‘And then after I have my hot water and lemon I, I do some like burpees shock nobody wake up, push ups, sit ups and I do like three, I do four sets of three workouts.
‘I do four workouts and three sets of those four workouts. And that usually takes about 30 minutes at the most.
‘Then I put on my clothes. And like everyone I get on my phone and you got to tell yourself like do I live for the phone, or do I live, and I take care of my, my body first.
‘My I, my soul I spirit. My, I health. Or do our focus on this iPhone. And this iMessage, and all these apps like do I focus on my apparatus, or do I give my attention and my energy to the apps that are at us.
‘I do, I try my hardest to just, you know, give me 30 minutes of physical preparation because your body can just go you can let yourself go after COVID back where did these freaking love handles come from coal mine what I got out of it my boobs start drooping I’m a dude.
‘And I happened to me like, you know, April, May of last year.
‘I let myself go with it, because I was just bombarded by like can’t go out, i waiting and anxious like when is the world going to open back up. Not thinking it was gonna take us to 2021.
‘And then I just shook myself and was like, you can’t let yourself go so June, started riding my bike.
‘By October I was like juicing a juice the whole month of October. So my advice to people at home is just love yourself.
‘Take care of yourself and don’t wait for the day like you’re in some hospital bed or you’re sick, wishing, if only I did this.
‘If only I gave myself meantime. If only I ate right because it’s going to happen to all of us.
‘There’s going to be some, some like health mountain that you’re going to have to climb.
‘And you’re going to ask yourself, what did I do wrong and what could I have done make this make this hike, a little bit easier for me?
‘Right. It’s either going to happen when you’re older, or it’s going to happen at some point in time in your life where you’re like, damn, I’ve made it harder for myself.
‘It’s going to happen to all of us. We’re going to have that freaking hike that hell hike. And we’re gonna wish for a better right.
‘You care about your own right like oh s*** I gotta charge my phone, and you’re conscious when your battery’s dead you ask the people around it so you kind of battery charge.
‘Do you do the same thing for yourself, do you treat your body and your mind the way you refresh your apps, the way you update your service?
‘The way you charge your battery and the way you put a case on your phone so you don’t crack the screen and the moment you crack the screen you’re trying to get a new one. Do you treat your body in your life, the same way?
‘Go to Instagram to get the new feature Do you update yourself to get the new feature of yourself, spiritually, mentally and physically?
‘I love technology, I love it. But I love me, I love me-ology.
