Total Bellas: Nikki Bella goes into labor as twin sister Brie records the moment her water breaks

Nikki Bella went into labor with her son Matteo on Thursday’s episode of Total Bellas.

The 37-year-old reality star was at her ob-gyn appointment four days ahead of her due date when her water broke on the examining table.

Her twin sister Brie had been filming the visit but the camera was off when it happened, which left a shocked Brie floundering around for it, and uttering ‘S***!’

‘Oh my God, my water broke,’ Nikki said, as her sister taped her. ‘I wish you’d kept filming Brie! I can’t believe this. He’s coming today.’

Brie’s due date had come and gone three days before, and though she had passed important stages in the pre-labor period, she was not quite there yet.

First-time mom Nikki said she was ‘nervous,’ and Brie, who had a toddler, affirmed, ‘I’m nervous for you!’

In a confessional, Nikki said, ‘I would joke about going into labor before Brie, but I honestly never thought that would happen because she was dilated for like, weeks.’

‘You guys, how crazy?’ she said to the cameras.

Although it was not shown on the episode, the twins would end up giving birth less than 24 hours apart.

Matteo Chigvintsev was born July 31, 2020, one day before Brie’s son Buddy Danielson was born.

The twins also ended up giving birth in Phoenix, Arizona, where they owned houses right next to each other.

Deciding where to give birth was an agonizing process for Nikki, whose insurance only covered her in Los Angeles, but some shocking news solidified her need to be in Phoenix.

As the season six episode titled Family Ties opened, Nikki and fiancé Artem Chigvintsev, 38, were driving away from Arizona and toward Los Angeles.

It had been hard for Nikki to leave her sister and mom behind, and she was feeling devastated.

As if some part of her knew she would return, she accidentally left Matteo’s hospital outfit and several other important things in his room there.

She was making an off-road pit-stop with a portable potty when her sister Brie called.

Brie informed Nikki that their mother, Kathy Laurinaitis, 56, who suffered from Bell’s palsy, had a downturn in her condition and was taken to the Mayo Clinic.

‘Something’s really wrong,’ Brie said, relating that one side of Kathy’s mouth was paralyzed, her eye wouldn’t shut, she couldn’t taste anything and she was dizzy.

Not long afterward, Brie called back: An MRI had found a lesion ‘the size of a blueberry’ on Kathy’s brainstem, and she would need surgery.

‘So what she had was not Bell’s palsy,’ explained Brie, who like Nikki was scared for her mom.

Nikki turned to Artem, and said, ‘I feel weird going to LA right now. I feel like we should drive home.’

Artem agreed and they turned the car around, heading back to Phoenix.

Soon Nikki joined Brie at home, and they called Kathy via video to check on her condition.

With one side of her face immobile, Kathy revealed that there was just a 20 percent chance her face would return to normal, and said the surgery could trigger a stroke that might kill her.

Her doctor had asked her whether she wanted to schedule the surgery before the twins had their babies or after, but each choice was fraught with potential dangers.

If something happened during surgery, Kathy might not be able to meet the babies; if she did it after they were born, it could be too late to address her worsening condition.

The girls shared lunch with their mom and her husband Johnny ahead of her surgery, wanting to see her before coronavirus safety rules barred them from going to the hospital.

Nikki revealed that she’d made an important decision about her future.

‘Artem and I were talking, and we just feel like it’s the best to have the baby here in Phoenix,’ she said. ‘So we’re just gonna do it.’

Nikki’s maternity insurance wouldn’t cover her in Phoenix, but she called it ‘a risk I’m willing to take.’

Kathy asked the girls to look after Johnny if anything should happen to her, and to stay close to their brother JJ, which they promised they would.

The morning Kathy went into surgery, they tried anything they could think of to lighten the mood.

Brie offered to test her breast pump on Artem, who balked and said, ‘It’s just wrong to milk a man.’

‘I just want to see what your nipple would look like,’ Nikki begged as he allowed it for a second. ‘It’s like a little pepperoni!’

That afternoon, Artem and Brie’s husband Bryan Danielson, 39, strapped on ’empathy bellies’ to show solidarity with their pregnant partners.

Artem’s outfit mimicked his water breaking, which the women thought hysterical.

Their mother, however, was never far from their mind, as her surgery passed the six-hour mark.

‘I can’t stop praying for my mom, or being emotional about my mom, but this day has felt like f***ing three days,’ Nikki said to the cameras.

Johnny suddenly called with the news that Kathy was doing well and was coherent in ICU.

The surgeon had taken longer because he had to go ‘millimeter by millimeter’ to get the entire mass out of Kathy’s head, and he had made five or six passes at it.

‘He said he’s glad he did this, because it could have been fatal down the road for her,’ Johnny told the twins.

Afterward, their mom was calling them from her post-op bed, and then she was home, where her girls climbed into bed with her.

Kathy’s eye was still not right, and her face drooped, but she looked and sounded better than she had before.

She put her hand on Brie’s belly, where her daughter’s baby kicked.

‘I don’t know,’ Kathy said. ‘I would not rule out a boy.’

Three weeks later, as her due date approached, Brie wondered what her ‘birth story’ was going to be and how her baby would arrive.

‘I just can’t wait to meet whoever you are down there,’ she said.

Later, as the twins sat around with their partners, Brie dropped a bomb.

‘We should tell Artem and Bryan how we’ve been doing a little house shopping,’ she said to Nikki, then addressed the room: ‘We should move to Napa.’

It turned out that the sisters had seen two great homes available in California’s wine country and felt it would be perfect for them.

In a confessional, Brie said, ‘Just seeing everything going on in the world, and then seeing what my mom’s going through, it’s like, ”Wait a second. You might not get the next five years. You might not get tomorrow.” Like, what fulfills you? Do it today.’

Bryan liked the idea, but he had already been through eight moves with his wife, and he wondered when it all might end.

‘Could we find a worse time to move?’ he joked, thinking of her mom, and the babies.

‘It’s nuts,’ Nikki agreed.

Total Bellas will return next week on the E! network.
