Woman and her unborn child sitting in parked car are killed in Wilmington shooting, LAPD have said

A pregnant mother-of-three and her unborn child were killed in a Los Angeles shooting on Sunday morning, officials have said. A man was also left wounded.

Arlene Leonor Rodriguez, 24, was seven months pregnant with her fourth child when she was killed by a gunman as she was sitting in her car in a Wilmington neighborhood.

The shooting, believed by Rodriguez’s family to be gang related, occurred when the man was working on the engine of the parked car at about 11:25 a.m.

The LAPD said that an unnamed shooter ‘approached on foot and fired multiple rounds’ into the vehicle parked on North Neptune Avenue before fleeing on foot.

Paramedics rushed the victims to a local hospital where Rodriguez and her unborn baby – a boy – were pronounced dead.

‘She was seven months pregnant, and tragically her baby did not survive,’ LAPD said in a statement.

The man, who has not been identified by officials, suffered a non-life threatening injury.

Family members and friends gathered and made a small makeshift memorial for Rodriguez, featuring a stuffed animal, flowers and candles at the scene of the shooting.

NBC LosAngeles reported that family members believed the shooting to be gang-related.

Rodriguez, who was the mother of three children – a three-year-old boy and two-year-old twin girls – had just celebrated her birthday eight days before the shooting.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family of Arlene Rodriguez to help cover funeral costs by her stepmother Jessica Rodriguez.
