Sarah Jessica Parker hits back at critic who brands her ‘pretentious’ for sharing film knowledge

Sarah Jessica Parker has hit back at a critic who branded her ‘pretentious’ for sharing her film knowledge on her Instagram account on Tuesday.

The actress, 55, was caught off guard when she was met with a negative comment as she shared a quote from 1979 movie The In-Laws and encouraged the public to follow social distancing rules amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Responding to the fellow social media user with a lengthy message, the Sex and the City star urged the ‘hostile’ fan to ‘be more gentle’ and insisted her caption was merely an ‘amusing reference’ to uplift others during ‘these painful, heartbreaking, uncertain times’.

The award-winning thespian promoted COVID-19 prevention guidance as she uploaded an image of a pavement which read: ‘MAINTAIN A SOCIAL DISTANCE’.

‘”Serpentine, serpentine!” “The In-Laws” Thats what I do. With mask. X,SJ.’ (sic), the media personality wrote in the accompanying caption, to which the unimpressed Instagram user said: ‘You are so pretentious.’

Sarah expressed her shock at the remark as she replied: ‘why???? Come on!!!! Why???? Really? What’s pretentious about a photo of a sidewalk? Can we not be more gentle? Ugh.’

‘Granted, maybe of a certain generation. That’s why I used a sort of annotation by adding ”In-Laws”. But with all due respect, that doesn’t qualify as pretentious. Pretentious is not giving content and just assuming.

‘It would be nice not to instantly resort to using an adject that is seen as felt as negative or mean. It wasnt a pretentious exercise of my part, it was an amusing reference with some added clarity for those who might not be familiar.

‘I just, I’m, I can’t explain. Something simple like my post just doesn’t seem worthy of the inference which comes across as hostile. That might not have been your intention but that is how it felt.

‘And in these painful, heartbreaking, uncertain times a post about trying to keep each other healthy and safe seems undeserving of a response that is open to misunderstanding. Goodnight all. Got to get up early for work. X.’ (sic)
