A Streatham café owner asks ‘can you give us half-an-hour’ as police officer tries to evacuate it

A café owner has been caught on camera asking ‘can you give us half-an hour’ because people ‘have just started eating’ as a police officer tries to evacuate the area amid the Streatham ‘terror attack’.

A police officer received backlash from the owner of Life Cafe Restaurant on Streatham High Street, London, as he tried to evacuate the diners and staff amid the south London ‘terror attack’. She told the officer: ‘Just give us half an hour before close, people have just started to eat’

He tells the eatery: ‘Sorry guys, we’re going to have to close. We’ve got to evacuate I’m afraid.’

A woman shrieks ‘what’, interrupting his announcement before he goes on to say: ‘There’s been a terrorist incident down there.’

The officer then signals towards the road and tells them ‘we’re closing everything down’.

‘If you guys want to stay social, listen to me.’

The officer put the incident to the owner plainly. He told her a 'terrorist has been shot dead' and urged the diners to 'make [their] way from the area'

Within a matter of seconds, the owner protests his command and tries to assert her authority by saying ‘just half an hour until close’.

‘Just give us half an hour before close, people have just started to eat.’

Appearing close to losing his patience, the officer raises his voice and puts the truth to her plainly.

He shouts: ‘Madam, a terrorist has been shot dead just down there. They’ve possibly got an ID vest on them which is a bomb.

‘If you want to try and stay in for half an hour and you want to put peoples lives in danger, then be my guest.’

He then urges the café to ‘please listen to me’ and to make their way out of the shop and ‘make [their] way from the area’ which is an 11 minute walk from the scene of the incident.

He grabbed a knife from a shop and stabbed a man and a woman during the brutal high-street rampage on High Road in south London.  

At least three people were injured and one was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition, Scotland Yard confirmed.
