Karl Stefanovic takes a savage swipe at New Idea and Woman’s Day on Today

Karl Stefanovic took a savage swipe at New Idea and Woman’s Day on Wednesday, after years of being headline fodder.

The 45-year-old joked on the Today show that everything the tabloid magazines publish is ‘120 per cent true!’

It came during a segment about Megxit: the decision by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to ‘step down’ as senior members of the royal family.

‘Journalists don’t always tell the truth… if you’re hearing it from New Idea or Woman’s Day or whatever, it may not be true,’ said Today’s royal expert.

Karl then interrupted with a laugh: ‘That is not cool for you to say that. Everything that is written in New Idea or Woman’s Day is 120 per cent true!’

Co-host Allison Langdon then joked that Karl has ‘110 kids’ according to those publications.

As Allison swiftly moved on to another segment about how to ask one’s employer for a pay rise, she took a cheeky swipe at Karl’s salary.

‘Thinking about asking for a pay rise this year? Working with Karl, I sure do! What you need to know before asking the big question,’ she said.

Karl responded: ‘I’m having another ten kids next month, I need it!’

After a disastrous year of ratings, Channel Nine kicked off 2020 with a revamped Today show hosted by Karl and Allison.

On Monday, New Idea reported that Allison had negotiated a ‘secret exit strategy’ in case the breakfast program wasn’t a success.

According to an ‘insider’, the 40-year-old journalist had initially been hesitant to join the program given the various staff dismissals since 2018.

‘The job could be a blessing or a curse to a career,’ said the anonymous source.

They claimed that Allison had requested a clause in her contract to ‘safeguard’ her career at Nine should Today fail to win back audiences.

It was reportedly agreed upon that Allison would be reinstated as a 60 Minutes reporter in the event of her being removed from Today’s panel.

‘Allison is excited by the challenge and is a hard worker, but if it goes downhill then she will just go back to doing what she is good at again,’ added the insider.

However, a Channel Nine spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia on Monday: ‘It’s a complete lie and rubbish from our commercial competitors.’

New Idea is owned by Seven West Media.

Allison joined the 60 Minutes team in 2011. She continued to work there even after replacing Deborah Knight as host of Weekend Today in 2017.

In November 2019, Nine announced that Allison would be co-hosting a revamped Today show with Karl Stefanovic from January 2020.
