EastEnders bosses pay tribute to Barbara Windsor by naming new baby after pub landlady

EastEnders bosses are to pay tribute to Dame Barbara Windsor by naming Albert Square’s newest baby arrival after her character Peggy Mitchell.

Legendary pub landlady Peggy’s granddaughter Louise, played by Tilly Keeper, is pregnant with her boyfriend Keanu Taylor’s baby.

And on hearing the news that the newborn would be named Peggy, 82-year-old Barbara’s face ‘lit up’, her husband Scott Mitchell, 56, has said.

The actress’ character left the soap for the last time in 2016 when she tragically passed away following a cancer diagnosis.

The scene came after Barbara said she needed to ‘shut the door’ on playing Peggy after she was herself diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Scott said his wife was ‘delighted’ with the news that Peggy would live on in spirit.

‘She thought what a lovely thing it is Peggy Mitchell will live on in a family member. What a lovely tribute,’ he told The Sun

‘It made her quite emotional and I have been reminding her each time we watch the show every night.

‘Each time her whole face lights up.’

MailOnline has contacted BBC for comment.

Peggy, who was the landlady of the Queen Vic, was loved for her ‘get outta my pub’ catchphrase.

She was the matriarch of the Mitchell family and was mother to warring brothers Phil and Grant Mitchell, as well as daughter Sam.

And it looks as though the drama of the Mitchell family will live on in Peggy junior – as the baby’s father Keanu is secretly expecting a baby with Louise’s stepmother Sharon.

And given that Phil and Louise both believe the baby is his, there is a scandal set to be exposed.

An insider said: ‘The scandal is blown wide open at Christmas. It is going to make for truly gripping viewing.’

The news comes after Barbara’s friend Christopher Biggins, 70, said she is ‘hanging in there’ with her Alzheimer’s fight but would get ‘too confused’ to attend a big public event.

Panto star Christopher visited his close friend, who was diagnosed with the degenerative condition in 2014, last week and gave an update on her condition.

The actress is ‘still able to get out and about’ but a big public event would be ‘too much’ for her, Christopher said.

Barbara last appeared in public in September when she met Boris Johnson in Downing Street to call on him to ‘sort out’ dementia care.

But speaking to the Mirror, Christopher said the former Eastenders and Carry On actress would never be ‘100 per cent’ because of her condition.

He said the ‘terrible disease’ is awful for the star, who is looked after by her husband Scott Mitchell, 56.

‘She is still able to get out and about sometimes but I don’t think she would be able to go to a big event any more,’ he said.
