Bulgaria legend Hristo Stoichkov broke down in tears while speaking about the racial abuse England players suffered during a match against his country on Monday night.

The Euro 2020 qualifier in Sofia was halted twice as England’s black players were subjected to shocking racist chants and monkey noises from the home supporters.

UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Bulgaria for a number of charges and it remains to be seen how severe their punishment will be.

Stoichkov, Bulgaria’s greatest ever player, was asked how to tackle racism in football during a television appearance on TUDN, an American Spanish language sports channel, and got emotional when he delivered his response.

‘What is the solution?’, the presenter asks before Stoichkov replies: ‘That fans are not allowed in the stadium or even heavier punishments.

‘Like in England for years. Five years without going to stadiums. People don’t deserve to suffer.’ The 53-year-old then leaned forward and appeared to start to cry as the conversation moved on to the other guests.

It is believed Stoichkov is talking about the punishment for Heysel where English club sides were banned from European club competitions for five years after 39 people were killed before the start of the 1985 European Cup final.

During his illustrious playing career, Stoichkov was accused of making racist comments towards former France and Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly.

During Euro 1996, Desailly claimed: ‘In the first 20 minutes he made comments about me and other African players.’ No action was ever taken against Stoichkov though.

Stoichkov won the Ballon d’Or in 1994 and won numerous titles with CSKA Sofia and Barcelona during his career. He was part of Johan Cruyff’s exceptional team at the Nou Camp, winning four consecutive La Liga titles and the Champions League.

Bulgaria’s issues with racism came back into the spotlight as the shocking scenes unfolded on Monday night.

England debutant Tyrone Mings had complained that he had been targeted in the 22nd minute of the game and monkey chants were heard whenever Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford were on the ball and home fans were seen making Nazi salutes.

The Football Association has now reportedly offered counselling to Gareth Southgate’s players in a bid to help them overcome the traumatic evening.

According to The Times, all players in the squad for the trip to Sofia were written to by the FA on Tuesday giving them the opportunity to receive support.

Bulgaria coach Krasimir Balakov has now apologised to England players just days after he denied he was aware of any racism taking place at the Vasil Levski National Stadium

Balakov said in a statement: ‘My comments prior to the game versus England – that Bulgaria did not have trouble with racism – were based on the fact that the local championship has not seen such an issue on a large scale.

‘There might have been isolated cases, but it is definitely not something that you see at the stadium.

‘The majority of football fans do not participate in such chants and I believe this also to have been the case in the game against England.

‘I would like to state one thing very clearly – since there have been reported cases of racial discrimination at the stadium in Sofia I, as Bulgaria national team head coach, would like to offer my sincere apologies to the English footballers and to anyone who felt offended.’

Reports in the Bulgarian press are suggesting that Balakov could quit this Friday when the resignation of FA president Borislav Mihaylov will be approved.
