Nine hits back at claims they offered $1.5 million to poach Carrie Bickmore for Today show

Channel Nine executives have quashed rumours they have ‘secret plans to poach Carrie Bickmore to co-host the Today program with former anchor Karl Stefanovic‘.

The Network’s news boss, Darren Wick, and Director of Morning Television, Steven Burling, labelled Sunday’s report in The Daily Telegraph as ‘complete fabrication’.

The article claimed Nine had offered $1.5 million to Carrie, 38, in the hopes of enticing the beloved Project host to jump ship from Channel Ten.

The publication claimed to have insider knowledge from a source ‘close to the deal’, who said: ‘Despite Karl’s patchy history he is still seen as a star who can draw an audience. And Carrie is undoubtedly seen as a legitimate star of the future.’

‘The question is whether (Nine) can align the planets and pull this deal off,’ the mystery source said.

The article then claimed a source close to Carrie – who asked not to be named – said she saw the move to Nine ‘as a step us into the big leagues’.

‘She feels like 10 years (on The Project) is a good run and that it’s time for a new challenge,’ the alleged insider claimed.

In a statement to Daily Australia on Sunday, Nine Director of News and Current Affairs, Darren Wick, dismissed the report as a ‘fantasy’.

‘Nine has not approached, and does not intend to approach, Carrie Bickmore or her representatives about joining Nine as a host of the Today Show, nor in any other role,’ he said.

‘Carrie is an outstanding broadcaster and an inspirational person. She’s terrific. But she does not factor in our plans for the future.’

Daily Mail Australia had contacted Carrie Bickmore’s management for comment.

Steven Burling, who is the Executive Producer of Today, tweeted his response to the story on Sunday.

‘What agenda sees you create such a fiction about Today?! I’m not sure which talent agent fed you this tidbit – but you’ve been used and played for a fool!’

He also stated it was a simple ‘no’ to the rumours, and said the story was ‘completely fabricated’.

New Idea claimed that luring Carrie to Channel Nine would be Karl’s chance to ‘get revenge’ on Lisa Wilkinson – who left the Today show in 2017 following a pay dispute.

Today later axed Karl during his highly-publicised honeymoon in December 2018.

The show, which is now helmed by Georgie Gardner and Deborah Knight, has suffered dismal ratings during its 2019 run.
