Woman who was shot in the stomach at 34 weeks pregnant describes the moment her baby stopped kicking

A woman, whose baby died eight days after she was shot in the stomach while 34-and-a-half weeks pregnant, has recounted the incident where she was left bleeding in the streets after a man who invaded her Texas family home gunned her down as she chased him out.

Andrew Nino and Kiara Paz, both 18, plus Alyssa Brianna Vega, 29, were charged with first-degree felony aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon after Desire Guardiola took a bullet to the stomach on July 20.

The victim had ordered her boyfriend to follow Nino – who held them at gunpoint while he stole drugs, money and an X-Box alongside a woman who Guardiola begged not to stabbed her- then she followed the assailants outside and yelled for neighbors to help.

‘As soon as I stepped foot out the apartment I started screaming for someone to help me that two people just broke into my apartment with a gun and knife and were taking my things!’ Guardiola told the Daily Mirror newspaper online. ‘I continued to run and as I came around the corner I noticed the boyfriend was fighting for my stuff back in which he was somewhat successful and was able to grab a few things back.

‘Still running I looked back to see if he was okay and then I heard a gunshot. I knew I had been hit because immediately I felt an intense pain spread throughout my stomach. I quickly covered where I felt blood escaping, the backside of my lower right abdomen.’

She held the wound and prayed until EMS arrived but knew it was bad news the moment she was wounded.

‘Right after the noise of the gunshot I could no longer feel Emery kicking in my stomach and I knew something was wrong,’ Guardiola continued. ‘In the EMS ride they tried to detect her heartbeat in which they soon found out wasn’t there. They called for an emergency c section an anaesthetist.’

Guardiola – who had worked at a Taco Bell in Austin for two years before the tragic incident – ended up delivering her daughter named Emery Skye via Caesarean after she was rushed to hospital, but she had bled for 45 minutes and the child was born brain dead.

Emery was starved of oxygen after a bullet went through her mother’s abdomen, uterus and intestines while nicking some organs.

The infant had to be resuscitated after the C-section and was airlifted to another hospital where medical staff enabled the woman to see her daughter via FaceTime.

Guardiola was reunited with her daughter, who was unable to breathe unassisted or cry, and suffered seizures. The mother was fortunate to be able to bathe the little girl, change her diaper and be there for weigh-ins and taking her temperature.

But she and the child’s father had to make the heart-breaking decision to turn off the life support machine on July 28 but the mother made sure to baptize Emery first.

Guardiola labelled it a ‘miracle’ that Emery was able to breathe own her own for 30 minutes after being taken off the tubes but she then turned purple and passed away peacefully in her mother’s arms.

The woman’s mother and grandmother arranged the funeral for the child who they decided not to cremate after hearing it would take six month to get her body back from the examiner.

Guardiola wrote in a Facebook post on September 10: ‘Oh how I fell in love with the feeling of you and the thought of the woman you’d one day be. I was blessed with you, my sweet Emery Skye, when I was most lost and needed a reason to live and be the best I could be. I am thankful for being able to carry you, love you, spend moments with you.’

The devastated parent continued: ‘You are ever so loved and you’ve been able to do things I as a woman was never able to do or never thought I’d have the power to do…. Bring people together to love and support one another and have an even stronger faith.

‘You will always be my blessing and I’m so hurt that you’re missing from my arms but you’ll never be gone from my heart…I know you would’ve been the MOST AMAZING WOMAN… Because even gone you’ve impacted so many with your spirit and your fight.

‘Play happily with all the other angel babies and the rest of our guardian angels. Even after justice is served I promise to keep your spirit loved and alive.’
