Veronica Mars and iZombie creator Rob Thomas has discussed his unlikely friendship with the lead singer of Matchbox Twenty – who is also named Rob Thomas.
On Thursday, the TV producer and director admitted he’d been confused for his musician namesake on countless occasions over the last decade.
‘I’ve gotten to know him [singer Rob Thomas] over the years, because so much of our stuff has gotten confused,’ the 54-year-old told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Back in the day [at the height of Matchbox Twenty] I’d get notes from girls who would say something like ‘Rob, you can push me around at 3AM anytime you want,”’
‘I was like ‘oh, this person does not mean me. This person was looking for the other Rob Thomas’,’ he joked.
Rob said he eventually came to embrace the case of mistaken identity – even including on-screen references in his TV shows.
It all came full circle in 2016, when he hired musician Rob to act and perform in the second season finale of iZombie.

‘We get it all the time, so yes it was a bit of an Easter egg for fans, and there was even a Rob Thomas mention in season three of Veronica Mars.’
‘The funny thing about that iZombie moment was when we asked Rob if he would be interested in doing it, we had no idea that he was a big iZombie fan,’ he said.
Producer Rob first made waves in 2004 for his involvement in the critically-acclaimed TV series Veronica Mars.
While musician Rob, 47, rose to international fame with Matchbox Twenty’s debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You in 1996.
