A prediction from satirical news site
The satire article was about the elderly New Jersey congressman asking Representative Ilhan Omar if he could be part of the so-called ‘squad,’ which include freshmen Omar,
The Tuesday article was titled: ’82-Year-Old New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell Quietly Asks Ilhan Omar If He Can Be Part Of The Squad.’
Pascrell retweeted the article on his Twitter and asked the four congressmen, ‘Well. How bout it?’
Both Omar and Ocasio-Cortez responded positively to the proposal on Tuesday.
A headline from satirical website The Onion came true this week when the ‘squad’ of four congresswomen welcomed 82-year-old Rep. Bill Pascrell from New Jersey into the group
Freshmen Representatives Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (left to right) are all progressives of similar minds that refer to themselves as ‘the squad’
The four banded together even closer over the weekend when President Donald Trump told them to ‘go back’ to fix their countries of origin and stop interfering in American government
‘You’re in, @BillPascrell!’ Ocasio-Cortez, who represents New York’s 14th district, tweeted – adding a heart and happy face emoji.
Omar posted a gif of rapper Snoop Dogg nodding with the caption, ‘Oh fo sho.’
Pascrell posted another tweet in response of a Napoleon Dynamite gif indicating he was excited to be welcomed into the ‘squad’ of four freshmen representatives.
The Onion article framed it differently, with Pascrell approaching the Somali-American representative and saying, ‘Excuse me, Ms. Omar, but I’ve been paying a good deal of attention to this so-called ‘squad’ of yours and can’t help but think that I might make an exciting addition to join in on the fun.’
Ocasio-Cortez and her three colleagues began calling themselves ‘the squad’ when they banded together over the past few weeks in progressive standpoints.
Earlier this month, they were the only four to vote against a Republiccan $4.6 billion border bill that included sending financial aid to migrant detention centers at the border.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi berated the congresswomen for the vote, claiming they may have large social media followings, but that their real support showed in their measly four ‘no’ votes.
The Onion article had Pascrell quietly asking Omar if he could join the close-knit group
‘Well. How bout it?’ Pascrell asked on Twitter of Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Tlaib and Pressley
They responded enthusiastically, with Ocasio-Cortez saying: ‘You’re in!’
On Monday the ‘squad’ held a press conference condemning Trump’s comments against them and calling for this impeachment
Pelosi championed the Republican bill after reports of horrific conditions at migrant facilities along the border emerged.
The four freshmen and House leadership have been at odds – especially since leadership is mostly made up of more moderate, establishment Democrats.
President Donald Trump over the weekend also upped his attacks on the congresswomen, telling them to ‘go back’ to their countries and fix the issues there then come show American how to amend its issues.
‘So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,’ Trump posted to Twitter Sunday.
‘Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came,’ he suggested of the ‘squad.’ ‘Then come back and show us how it is done.’
Omar was born in Somalia and immigrated with her family when she was a child – she became a citizen when she was 17. The other three lawmakers were born and raised in America.
Ocasio-Cortez is of Puerto Rican descent, Tlaib’s parents are Palestinian and Pressley is African American.
The group held a press conference Monday to condemn Trump’s comments and call for his impeachment. They also said the president was using language of a white supremacist.
