The BBC confirmed on Monday that the drama’s debut episode of the fifth season gained the staggering viewership numbers over a 4-screen consolidated audience.
As a result, the show is now the most watched programme of 2019 so far across all channels, and is the company’s most popular show since Bodyguard last year.
Line Of Duty is written by Jed Mercurio, who is also the brains behind BBC’s stand-out hit show Bodyguard.
After an absence of two years, the hit police procedural now focuses on the travails of AC-12, an anti-corruption squad based at Polk Avenue police station in a nameless northern town, although it is actually filmed in Belfast.
Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), Detective Inspector Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) are the leading stars of the drama.
