Hollyoaks’ Andy Newton-Lee reveals he ‘saw white lights’ after prescription drug abuse

Former Hollyoaks actor Andy Newton Lee has spoken out on how his priorities have changed after he was placed in a medically-induced coma for a week.

The 38-year-old star – who played Robbie Flynn in the soap – was found collapsed at the wheel of his car in Los Angeles and rushed to hospital, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia and placed in a coma in May.

He has now admitted that he saw ‘white lights’ and was close to death following his hospitalisation and has ‘stopped taking Adderall’ – a drug prescribed to the star for to treat his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Andy believes the amphetamine-derivative – that is illegal in the UK, but often prescribed in the USA – combined with ‘burning the candle at both ends’ impacted his health.

Speaking to The Sun, the actor – who splits his time between Los Angeles and the UK – recalled: ‘I remember seeing white lights and feeing my body going up and down – I honestly think I was close to death…

‘I remember taking three Adderall tablets that day and I think that combined with the pneumonia, doing hot yoga twice a day, being dehydrated, being tired -it just caused me to pass out.’

He shared: ‘I’ve stopped the Adderall and I want people to be aware of the problems prescription drugs can cause – there are so many people addicted to prescription drugs in this country – it’s an epidemic. I’m lucky I never got to that stage.’

As a result of his brush with death, he is now focusing on mental health through mindfulness and meditation.
