Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern enjoys a thrifty ride on the London tube

She plays the American heiress daughter turned lady of the manor in worldwide smash hit, Downton Abbey.

But Elizabeth McGovern was a far cry from her aristocratic on-screen persona, Countess Cora Crawley, as she enjoyed a thrifty ride on the London Tube this week.

Despite her estimated $4m net worth,  the American actress. 57, joined scores of other commuters on a Picadilly Line train.

Indulging in a newspaper instead of a script, the Golden Globe nominee, the beauty blended in with her fellow capital travellers.

Elizabeth looked typically chic in a grey tee worn with a tailored black blazer and slate grey skinny jeans as she read.

Her brunette bob was styled sleek and straight and she accessorised with green earrings.      

Elizabeth played Cora throughout the hit show’s original six series run, and will reprise her role in the upcoming feature-length film.

The much loved period drama, written by Julian Fellowes, ran for six series between 2010 and 2015 and won several accolades including Emmys and Golden Globes.   

As of now the film’s plot has been kept heavily under wraps, but a majority of the original series’ cast are expected to reprise their roles.

Yet actress Phyllis Logan, 62, – best known for her role as Mrs. Elsie Hughes during the show’s six series run until its end in 2015 – revealed some key details during an appearance on ITV show Loose Women.

Fielding questions about the Michael Engler directed film, the actress revealed it will pick up some two years after series six ended with a celebratory bang on New Year’s Eve 1925.

‘We’ve gone on a couple of years but that’s all, not anymore,’ she told panelists Nadia Sawalha, Carol McGiffin, Andrea McLean and Jane Moore.

Phyllis added that she was delighted to be back on set with her old cast-mates, some three years after the show went off air, despite the group staying in regular contact with one another in the interim.

It hadn’t been too long (since we last met),’ she said. ‘We try to have a Downton Abbey reunion. But to be up there (filming) was great.’  

Her admission comes after Matthew Goode, best known for his role as Henry Talbot, admitted the new film will include a range of characters not seen during the ITV period drama’s six series run.

‘It’s a very brilliant new story, the cast has got bigger,’ Goode, 40, told This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield in September. ‘I won’t tell you who’s in it. But there’s a lot of great new faces.’   

The feature length version of Downton Abbey is scheduled for release on September 13 2019.
