Exposed: Fake online poppy firm cashing in on war heroes’ suffering with fake products

An online trader is selling imitation poppy products on Facebook and marketing them with false claims that profits are shared with a charity that supports veterans.

British Legacy sells a range of items that closely resemble official Remembrance memorabilia, including enamel brooches priced from £9.99 and T-shirts costing £13.99 that commemorate the sacrifice of soldiers killed in battle.

The site says £1 from every T-shirt will be given to the Royal British Legion. However, last night the charity confirmed it has received no such donations and is taking legal action to protect its copyright of Red Poppy designs.

Customers have also complained of being misled into thinking that their purchases will raise funds for the charity.

‘This is a scam,’ claimed one Facebook buyer, Steve Sommerfeld. ‘It’s appalling these scumbags are profiteering from the sacrifices made by those who served. Shame on Facebook for allowing these con men to perpetrate their con using this platform.’

Another, with the name Crystal Cleary, wrote: ‘Absolute scam. This page needs shutting down.’

On its website, British Legacy claims to be ‘one of the world’s leading online discount stores’ and boasts customers can save up to 70 per cent on High Street prices. It has sold 7,000 items since October.

The company also says it is ‘based in the UK’ and products are ‘shipped from a UK fulfilment centre’, but The Mail on Sunday has established that no firm of that name is registered in Britain and the website was actually set up by EP Holdings, an internet sales company in Canada.

An RBL spokesman said: ‘We are aware that British Legacy offers a number of products that use the Red Poppy logo trademark. We have taken steps to request that these goods be removed from sale. Although some have been taken down from the website, there are still some pending removal and we are awaiting a further response.’

Last night, British Legacy said that it would remove RBL-related products and would be making a donation to the charity.

‘We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused,’ said a spokesman. ‘We were not aware of the copyright breach before the Royal British Legion contacted us.

‘Please be assured that all the products related to the RBL will be removed from our site and we will send a donation to the organisation.’

Facebook did not comment last night.
