Johanna Griggs reveals she felt like ‘a failure’ when her marriage to actor Gary Sweet ended

House Rules host Joanna Griggs has confessed to feeling like a failure when her marriage to veteran Australian actor Gary Sweet, 61, collapsed.

‘When a marriage ends, you feel like you’re such a failure in that aspect, but at the same time it really uncomplicated our lives,’ she told the Australian Women’s Weekly on Thursday.

The high-profile couple tied the knot in 1995.

After her divorce from Gary in 1999, Johanna was left as single mum to their two children, Jesse James, 24, and Joe Buster, 23.

But despite the stresses and strains of raising her two sons alone, the Better Homes And Gardens host says she would not swap the experience for anything.

‘I loved my years as a single mum,’ she told the publication. ‘There are situations where people go between parents – we really didn’t have that. So you’re the decision maker, they’re your little buddies.’

The mum-of-two has been married to 44-year-old Todd Huggins since 2006.

Indeed, the blonde beauty seems more fond of the memories of her family life than those of her swimming record, and the 26-year media career which came afterwards.

Johanna was the first female Australian swimmer to break the 30-second barrier for the 50-metre backstroke.

She won a bronze medal in the 100-metre backstroke at the 1990 Commonwealth Games at age 16, and won the 50-metre backstroke race at the Australian Swimming Championships in 1993.

Johanna then built a career in TV, first as a guest on Andrew Denton’s ABC program Live and Sweaty, before ultimately landing the hosting role on House Rules on Channel Seven in 2013.

Actor Gary Sweet rose to fame on TV show such as Police Rescue, Blue Heelers and House Husbands.
