Welsh chickens push sheep down the pecking order with more of the poultry than lambs (or people)

Countryside campaigners are claiming that the number of chickens in Wales alone will reach 10million by the end of this year.

The Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales is alarmed at the boom in poultry farms and has claimed applications for new units ‘virtually never’ get refused.

The charity’s estimate could mean that the number of chickens in Wales may outnumber the 9.5million sheep.

While the number of sheep in Wales has only decreased in recent years, the number of chickens has steadily risen.

In 2008, Welsh Government figures recorded 2.1 million chickens.

Dr Christine Hugh-Jones, from the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales, said: ‘Applications for poultry units are coming in thick and fast and they virtually never get refused’.

The British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA) have expressed concerns that the current growth made lead to oversupply and declining prices – potentially good news for consumers but bad for farmers.

Representatives have also raised concerns over the number of poultry mega-farms.

Conservative AM for Aberconwy, Janet Finch Saunders, argues there should be a cap on the number of mega-farms.

She said: ‘Mass-production, over-production, is not the way forward for Wales.’

The Welsh Government said all farms are covered by the same planning regulations as other types of property.
