Emmerdale EXCLUSIVE: Shila Iqbal is FIRED after using the N-word

Emmerdale actress Shila Iqbal has been fired after posting a series of racist tweets in 2013, when she was 19 and attending college in Rochdale.

The star, 24, who played Aiesha Richards on the soap, has been dismissed by ITV bosses on Wednesday when the tweets were unearthed.

ITV sources exclusively revealed to MailOnline, she was immediately removed from the show after the messages were brought to bosses’ attention, shortly before Shila deleted her entire Twitter account when the news came to light.

‘The programme took the decision not to renew her contract as soon as these posts were brought to the company’s attention.’

‘She was making repeated use of the N-word. Straight out of the door. She was only 17/18 when the tweets were posted.’

Shila’s permanent role was confirmed just last month, as she said: ‘I am over the moon to be back at Emmerdale as a regular. My family love Emmerdale and to be appearing in a show that you’ve grown up watching just feels like a dream!…

‘[My character] Aiesha very much represents the new generation of social media fascination and her phone is her third hand. She is always camera ready! She speaks her mind, although it comes from a ditzy but good place for sure…

‘I think although certain locals may be annoyed by her initially, they soon begin to realise her effervescent personality is just Aiesha being Aiesha!’

The scandal comes as the show tackled racism in a storyline surrounding ex-con character Billy Fletcher, played by actor Jay Kontzle. Billy is accused of ‘acting suspiciously’ in what is deemed as racial targeting.

Shila’s scandal comes after ITV were forced to weather another racism storm in 2016 when Marc Anwar was fired from Coronation Street for a shock rant on social media.

Marc, who played the role of Sharif Nazir in Corrie, referred to Indians as b******s’ and ‘p***-drinking c***s’ on Twitter.

On his account – which ironically says ‘it’s not what you say, but what you do’ – he also wrote: ‘Why the f*** do Pakistani artists want to work in f***face India? Do you love money so much?’

It prompted a furious backlash on social media, with many describing themselves as ‘disgusted’ and others calling for the rant to be reported for a hate crime.
