The trailer gives a thrilling summary of the movie and what’s to come as the previously-tender main character Arthur Fleck is beaten down by bullies throughout life before he eventually turns evil due to his mistreatment.

Given a terrifying edge, an eery take on Smile, the 1936 Charlie Chaplin song made famous by Nat King Cole in 1954, plays in the background of the teaser.

The trailer opens with Arthur speaking to a therapist who tenderly asks: ‘Does it help to have someone to talk to?’, before he cuts a solitary figure while walking away.

Joaquin’s voice over the top then says: ‘My mom used to tell me to smile and put on a happy face. I thought my purpose was to bring laughter and joy to the world.’
