Residents of a tranquil Sacramento town are being terrorized by a series of mysterious explosions

A series of startling booms are simultaneously baffling and terrifying residents of a tranquil Sacramento town as they sleep in their beds.

For a number of months, dwellers in Fair Oaks have been terrorized by mysterious explosions that are rattling their windows and setting off their car alarms in the dead of night.

Determined to find the source of the sonic booms, the local community have mobilized together on Facebook, creating a forum to track the times, directions, and size of the sounds, hoping to catch the culprits in action.

Conspiracy theories of alien invasions and secret military operations have been regularly touted among the group’s – called ‘Fair Oaks Bangs’ – 800 members, but still the phenomenon remains a mystery.

One resident’s doorbell camera caught an explosion in motion on Sunday night, but the footage wasn’t able to show what – or who – was causing the noise.

‘It rattles the windows, it sounds like a firework going off in my backyard,’ resident Dallis Stumpf to CBS Local.

Stumpf added that the noises regularly startle her children.

‘She’s two-years-old and she comes out, “mommy what is that?” and she freaks out,’ Stumpf said.

After receiving several calls last weekend, the Fair Oaks Sheriff’s Department sent out a helicopter and a squadron of deputies to investigate the reports, but even they came up empty.

‘Nobody has actually seen them,’ said another resident. ‘Like, who they are, hold old they are, vehicle description, license plate number.

‘Nothing; they’re like ghosts,’ she concluded.

Neighbors are now said to be keeping a close eye out of their windows in the hope of catching the elusive culprits red-handed.

‘A woman observed four people in a white sedan thrown something out of a window,’ Kat Mountjoy, a resident of Fair Oaks, said in the group

Contrary to the various conspiracy theories, police say they’re confident the sounds are being caused by powerful illegal fireworks, which posses the same power as half a stick of dynamite.

They aren’t thought to have any leads in their investigation at this stage, but local residents are hoping the mystery reaches a speedy conclusion.

‘If it’s just kids having fun,’ one resident urged to CBS, ‘then just stop, because someone is going to get hurt.’
