MLB notebook: Nationals sign ex-Cardinals closer Rosenthal

The Washington Nationals and right-handed relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal agreed to a one-year deal on Saturday, the team announced.

Rosenthal reportedly will make $7 million and can earn an additional $8 million in incentives. The deal has a $14 million option for 2020 that will kick in if Rosenthal pitches in 50 games or finishes 30. The buyout is $1 million.

The 28-year-old Rosenthal missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on Aug. 30, 2017, as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Rosenthal was a National League All-Star in 2015 when he recorded a career-best 48 saves for St. Louis. He has 121 career saves in 328 appearances.

–Texas Rangers top executive Jon Daniels had plenty of candidates to choose from before selecting former Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Chris Woodward as the franchise’s 19th manager.

Woodward’s enthusiasm and ability to bridge old-school fundamentals with new-school analytics helped to set him apart, Daniels said. The Rangers on Monday will formally introduce the 42-year-old Woodward, who agreed to a three-year contract plus a club option for 2022.

“We are excited to welcome Chris Woodward and his family to the Texas Rangers,” said Daniels, the Rangers’ president of baseball operations and general manager. “Chris brings high energy, outstanding leadership and communication skills, a strong knowledge of the game and its evolving strategies, and great integrity — attributes that we feel are vital for our next manager.”

–The Toronto Blue Jays fired hitting coach Brook Jacoby and first base coach Tim Leiper, according to a report from The Athletic.

Both Jacoby and Leiper had one year remaining on their contracts.

More coaching changes could be in store for the Blue Jays under new manager Charlie Montoyo. The former Tampa Bay Rays bench coach described his support staff as “very important” as he prepares for his first year at the helm.
