Whether they were battling addiction or simply looking to lead healthier lives, the people who shared photos of themselves agree that giving up alcohol was the best decision for them.
Many of the people underwent dramatic physical transformations after just a year of not drinking, and some look completely unrecognizable now that they are sober.
From the woman who used to consume up to four bottles of wine a week to the man who lost more than 100 pounds after he quit drinking, their progress is undoubtedly inspiring.
New life: Todd’s before and after pictures were shared on the Instagram page Recovery Rockstars. The recovering alcoholic explained that he took the photo on the left outside an emergency room at sunrise, almost 17 months ago. ‘Something told me I didn’t want to forget that moment. I forget easily,’ he said. ‘I am going public with this now simply because I need to advocate for recovery more. We’re losing too many people to addiction. Recovery: A Reddit user known a sturgio_garcia posted a photo of herself an intensive care unit after an overdose alongside a smiling picture of herself six months sober. ‘Decided I was sick and tired of being sick and tired,’ she explained in the caption
Incredible: Reddit user Slipperyfister revealed he started his weight loss journey by giving up drinking. Three months later, he changed his diet. His ‘after’ photo was taken about 12 months after he started working. He lost a total of 105 pounds, going from 300 pounds to 195 pounds. ‘I haven’t felt this good in decades, maybe ever,’ he admitted
New life: Imgur user mrquint revealed the photo on the left was taken after she drank nearly an entire box of wine before consuming about 12 ounces of whiskey on stage during a stand-up comedy routine. ‘Pretty sure I almost died a little over a year ago,’ she admitted. The image on the right shows her almost a year sober. ‘[It is] important to remember when you came from.’ she explained
Dedicated dad: Reddit user Doolan91 gave up alcohol when his daughter turned one. ‘I’m five years sober today,’ he said of the picture on the right
Success: Reddit user DisregardThisOrDont revealed the picture on the left was taken on June 11, 2014. She posed for the photo on the right a little over two years later. ‘Here is what 826 days sober looks like,’ she wrote. ‘Recovery is possible!’
All smiles: Imgur user JohnDeCaux stopped drinking in April 2016 and said his life has ‘gotten so much better’ since he gave up alcohol. The photo on the right was taken nearly a year later after he lost about 45 pounds and shaved his beard. ’11 months sober and life has never been better,’ he captioned the images.
Happy now: A Reddit user know as PootieTang_ shared these before and after photos last December. ‘Doesn’t seem like much to some but 100 days with no alcohol,’ she wrote. ‘Don’t let fear of judgment get in the way of a better life
Transformation: ‘One year of no alcohol has changed my life,’ wrote Reddit user Klamsykrawl. ‘I lost 53 pounds and I’m 1,000 times happier. I tried to recreate my bloated pic’
Whole new look: Reddit user katyaontko posted her before and after photos in January, writing: ‘My recovery progress makes me smile. Four-plus years of sobriety transformation’
Better life: Reddit user fatheraabed revealed in May that he was three weeks away from one year of sobriety after a decade under the influence. He lost 50 pounds and found a new job doing what he is passionate about. ‘Life is much better and I definitely enjoy it now,’ he wrote.
Changes: When sharing her before and after photos, Jenifer King revealed on Instagram that she is nearly a year sober. ‘I’m coming up on my first year of sobriety (11.10.17),’ she wrote. ‘It’s crazy what a difference a year can make’
365 days: Reddit user VoteLibertarian shared before and after photos of his brother, who stopped drinking and lost 160 pounds in just one year. ‘So proud of my Brother! Celebrated one year of sobriety and also being one person lighter. Just Awesome!’ the person captioned the images

New outlook: Emily explained the picture on the left was taken in 2009 during a six-month relapse. She had just left her daughter’s dad and convinced herself that she didn’t have an addiction. ‘I was f*****g miserable and hated everything about myself during this phase,’ she admitted. The image on the right was taken in 2017 after celebrating seven years of sobriety. She said she also dropped weight, learned to accept her body, and started exploring her sexuality.
