Grey’s Anatomy recap: Meredith’s father is sick and Derek makes a return

A lot of people die on Grey’s Anatomy, that’s no secret, but this week’s episode is all about honoring those we’ve lost and figuring out how to deal with the ones who are still here.

And, while most of the doctors are trying to work out their complicated love lives, two doctors finally kiss after weeks of anticipation.

Teddy (Kim Raver) heads over to Owen’s (Kevin McKidd) place to finally tell him about her pregnancy. But, right as she is about to spill the beans, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) comes storming in because Betty (Peyton Kennedy) has ditched school.

Richard (James Pickens Jr.) breaks the news to Meredith that her father is dying from cancer — though she hasn’t seen or talked to her father in years.

Amelia, Owen, and Teddy spend the day trying to find Betty, which definitely throws a wrench in this whole pregnancy announcement situation.

Teddy tries to finally tell Owen the news at the end of the day, but she realizes he’s happy with his current situation.

Though it’s frustrating for viewers to wait for the secret to be spilled, we have a feeling Owen’s going to find out about his child sooner rather than later.

Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) father, Thatcher, is sick. It’s no secret Thatcher left Meredith when she was really young and also struggled with alcoholism, but he’s currently suffering from leukemia.

Richard (James Pickens Jr.) breaks the news to Meredith — who, by the way, hasn’t seen or talked to her father in years.

Not to mention, Meredith has another date scheduled thanks to her matchmaker, Cece. The date doesn’t go well — she’s zero for two right now — but it’s because she has other men on her mind.

Link (Chris Carmack) decides to ask Meredith out thanks to a push from Jo (Camilla Luddington), and though Meredith should definitely say yes because he’s super hot, she says no. Buzzkill.

Link does end up giving Meredith his phone number and she runs into him at Alex’s apartment at the end of the episode, so there’s definitely something brewing between them.

It’s also clear DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) still has a crush on Meredith and to be honest, we think she has a crush on him too. Hello, who could forget about those makeout dreams?!

The pair share a sweet moment after he decides to not do a surgery because their patient, who just so happens to be a little girl, also has a major crush on him.

DeLuca reveals he was looking forward to working with Meredith, but there was more to the moment than just that. We have a feeling there may be a love triangle in our future between Meredith, DeLuca, and Link.

DeLuca and Meredith’s patient is also celebrating Dia de los Muertos, aka Day of the Dead, which is a Mexican holiday and honors those they’ve lost.

Maggie (Kelly McCreary) becomes emotional while remembering her mother who passed away, but Meredith is still trying to figure out what to do about her father.

Though she hasn’t decided if she wants to see Thatcher, we are reminded of the people she has has lost throughout the years — George, Lexie, and yes, even Derek — when their spirits appear in the hospital.

We have a feeling there may be a love triangle in our future between Meredith, DeLuca, and Link. Lucky Meredith!

However, the best moment of the night goes to Nico (Alex Landi) and Schmitt (Jake Borelli), who finally kiss after weeks of flirting.

Nico, who is openly gay and very comfortable with his sexuality, kisses Schmitt on the elevator. Schmitt, on the other hand, tells Nico he’s never kissed a guy before and that he’s still figuring out his sexuality.

Though Schmitt seems excited about learning from Nico, Nico makes it very clear he’s not interested in dating someone who is still new in their sexuality journey. Buzzkill part two.

While these two may not be together right now, this is probably not the last we’re seeing of them.

While most of the characters are in steady relationships, it’s fun to see Meredith playing the field with two younger men. Will she end up with DeLuca, Link, or neither?

Plus, Teddy needs to tell Owen about her pregnancy ASAP. Let’s hope that big secret is shared next week!
