Ex-EastEnders star Janet Dibley ‘signs lucrative deal with Coronation Street bosses’

Ex-EastEnders legend Janet Dibley has reportedly signed a lucrative contract with Coronation Street bosses.

The 59-year-old actress, who rose to fame as Lorna Cartwright in the BBC soap 20 years ago, will make her debut in Weatherfield this Christmas as head teacher Melinda, according to reports.

Janet will undoubtedly bring some light-hearted joy among the dark plots set to rock the cobbles, as she organises the Nativity with Brian Packham (Peter Gunn).

A source told the Daily Star: ‘This is a coup for producers. Janet was a big favourite on EastEnders.

‘But now she’ll be spicing things up at Corrie.’

Janet is said to feature in seven episodes around the festive period, but with a strong fan base and her acting credentials, the soap star could make a return to Corrie next year for more explosive storylines.

MailOnline has contacted Coronation Street for comment.

Trouble is already brewing in Weatherfield as story-lines develop in preparation for the ITV soaps bombshell Christmas episode.

Speaking about what’s in store, producer Iain MacLeod told Metro: ‘Well, the seeds of the stories for Christmas are planted in the big episodes in October, without giving too much away.

‘It’ll be a Christmassy Christmas, it’ll have some big, heartbreaking stories within that, it’ll have a big shock at the end and hopefully it’ll be a surprising pay off to those stories that you’ve just seen the inception of here.

He added to The Sun: ‘Obviously there’s a kind of history in soap of going and trying to do the Angie and Den Christmas where it’s all acrimony and divorce papers and vitriol.

‘That’s not really my preference when you try and digest your stuffing balls and sprouts, you need it to be warm and you need it to be light-hearted in places and you need it to reek of Christmas.’

Janet catapulted into the spotlight as Lorna in EastEnders back in 1987.

Lorna, an alcoholic, was introduced primarily as a catalyst to break up Phil Mitchell’s marriage to Kathy Beale.

Although producers reportedly wanted to develop the character further, Janet was said to have declined their offer of an extended contract, as she disagreed with a proposed plot which would see Lorna gang raped, leaving the soap a year later.

The character returned on 17 March 2016, as part of Phil’s cirrhosis storyline.
