David Beckham’s personal trainer reveals why you should NEVER workout with a hangover

For many, the idea of heading to the gym after a big night out is an ideal way to ‘sweat it out’ and reset for the rest of the week. 

But one Australian personal trainer has revealed that this could be doing more harm than good.    

According to the Australian personal trainer who trains David Beckham, Shona Vertue, 31, no one should be in the gym when they’re hung over.

‘There’s a misconception that you can sweat out a hangover, or that you undo a night out by training and sweating really hard in the gym the next day,’ she told Body+Soul

She said that this isn’t effective because after a night out, people’s bodies are drastically dehydrated.

Shona explained that people need to be hydrated so that they can utilise fat as an energy source.

‘The other thing is that your chemical imbalance is really off, and you have a lot of toxins floating around in your system, so you’re actually putting yourself under more pressure,’ she said.

‘When your liver is working so hard to try and get rid of the alcohol, you don’t want to then say, “I’m going to go and do some hardcore HIIT to make it work even harder right now”.’

When you’re hungover, avoid the gym.

Shona explained that when people are hung over their bodies are trying to fight off inflammation and low blood sugar levels. 

She added that no one would tell someone with food poisoning to go to a gym class.

‘It’s the same sort of thing. So when you’re hung over, avoid the gym,’ the trainer said.

FEMAIL previously caught up with Shona, who is now based in London, to find out how people can whip their body into shape and change their attitude to fitness.

While her entry into the world of superstar personal trainers has been explosive, she said she’s always been into fitness.

‘I started gymnastics at the age of four, and didn’t give it up until High School. Then I moved into dance, yoga and weight training,’ she said.

The 31-year-old had been working in both a desk job and as a yoga teacher before she re-located to London from Bondi.

It was at this point that her career in personal training really took off.

When it comes to her personal training, Shona favours a dedicated but realistic approach.

‘I wake up, I meditate and then caffeinate. I lift weights four times a week and do high intensity cardio twice a week,’ she said.

Shona also practises a short sequence of ‘yoga or gymnastics mobility every night to prepare myself for bed’.

Speaking about her famous client, David Beckham, Shona said he was a joy to work with.

‘He’s an athlete so he’s very aware of his body,’ she said, maintaining a degree of discretion on account of his fame.

The trainer was introduced to him in 2015 by fellow Australian PT, James Duigan.

‘He’s super-focused, like all athletes, so he gets in and gets it done,’ she added.
