Single mother who Katie Piper’s acid attacker whisked away to hotel on first weekend of freedom

This is the new wife who Katie Piper’s acid attacker married during an Islamic ceremony in jail – then whisked away for a romantic break at a luxury hotel on his first weekend of freedom.

Stefan Sylvestre, who was released from prison on Wednesday after nine years for the despicable crime, took mother-of-one Danielle Burke to the four-star Angel Hotel in Guildford, Surrey.

The couple are understood to have married in a special ceremony while he was at Highpoint jail in Suffolk in December last year. He had given his consent to a relative to marry Ms Burke on his behalf without him present at the service.

As Katie bravely shook off news that her attacker had been freed by dancing the jive with Spanish partner Gorka Marquez this weekend before being voted off BBC One’s Strictly, Sylvestre and his wife were ordering burgers and chips to be brought to their £100-a-night room.

When confronted about his release from prison, he denied he was Sylvestre and claimed instead to be someone called Marcel Johnson.

And when told he bore more than a striking similarity to the acid yob, he smirked and said: ‘f***ing hell, he’s a handsome dude then!’

Sylvestre, 30, was released from jail on Wednesday and due to the terms of his licence must report to his bail hostel between the hours of 9pm and 7am.

MailOnline watched as Sylvestre left the hotel, situated in the heart of Guildford, at 8.30pm on Friday to head back to his hostel before returning early the following morning.

His wife had travelled from her home in Hammersmith, West London, to Surrey earlier on the Friday.

Throughout the day the couple remained largely in their hotel suite ordering room service for dinner.

They were equally private on Saturday, ordering room service again for breakfast -eggs benedict – and remaining inside all day rather than head out shopping or visiting Guildford’s bars or restaurants.

Sylvestre left the hotel again shortly before 8.30pm.

His decision to hide away may have been triggered by the fact that news of his release from prison was made public on Friday evening.

He was given a minimum six-year life term in 2009 after attacking Katie in Golders Green, North London, on the orders of her obsessive ex-boyfriend Daniel Lynch.

She was left partially blind following the 2008 attack and had to wear a plastic mask and endure 40 operations to treat her burns, which have left her with permanent scars.

Before her performance on Strictly on Saturday evening, the brave model and TV presenter tweeted: ‘Using meditation to stay calm and centred today. See you on the ballroom floor tonight.’

In August, the mother-of-two attended the parole board meeting to beg officials in person not to release Sylvestre from jail.

But officials decided he was no longer a danger to the public and should be released.

After the decision, Katie told fans she was having to come ‘to terms’ with the fact Sylvestre was being released.

She tweeted: ‘This is a really difficult time for me. I am trying to come to terms with the decision and this is something I need to deal with.

“Over the past 2 weeks Strictly has already given me such a welcome and positive distraction from my past. Whilst there is never a good time to hear this news, I am glad I have this new journey to concentrate on.”

Last month she also admitted she still suffers from anxiety and depression.

Although Strictly chiefs cleared her to perform on Saturday with 28-year-old Gorka, photographs taken between rehearsals over the last couple of days show Katie flanked by a burley minder.

Sylvestre’s licence conditions include an exclusion zone which bans him from an area around Katie’s home and any attempt to attend Strictly’s Hertfordshire studios would doubtless see a swift return to prison.

A friend of Ms Burke’s, who asked not to be named said: ‘She knows all about his past but it doesn’t bother her.

‘They got married while he was a prisoner late last year. He’s planning on moving in with Danielle and her son.

‘He’s met her boy and they get on well together. In the short time he’s been out of jail, they’ve gone eating out in restaurants like Wagamama in Hammersmith together.

‘I am wary, though, as this is a man with a history of extreme violence who left Katie Piper with horrific, life-changing injuries.

‘He says he’s a changed man and wants a family life and I hope that’s true for her sake.’
