A body found in the woods in Maine is believed to be a missing elementary school teacher and mom-of-two who disappeared in the middle of the night earlier this week.
Police announced Friday that a woman’s body was discovered in the woods less than half a mile from the home of 47-year-old Kristin Westra, who disappeared around 3am on October 1.
Authorities would not say who found the body, but a man living in a house near the scene told the

Westra’s husband Jay Westra, however, seemingly confirmed the tragic news in a Facebook post. Sharing a photo of himself with his wife, he wrote: ‘My heart was crushed today’.

‘As you can imagine, we’re all in shock, and we’re not going to be saying anything right now,’ one man told the outlet.
A friend of Westra’s said ‘things are still so raw’.

Police and volunteers had been searching the area for the past few days after Jay Westra said his wife got out of bed around 3am on Monday, left the home and never returned. She had left her car and phone behind.
The Maine State Police previously said her disappearance was not suspicious.

‘Sunday morning, Kristin was experiencing what I would call some anxiety and she expressed that she had some sleepless nights and was worried,’ he said.

Authorities have not confirmed the body found in the woods is Wells and they did not say how the body was located
Jay Westra, a pediatric oncology nurse, said he arranged for her to see a medical professional and she had an assessment that determined she was not a risk to harm herself or others.
He said after her appointment, they returned home and Westra went for a run while he went to the grocery store. Jay Westra said his family ate dinner together before he and Westra went to bed around 8pm.
According to Press Herald, Jay Westra said his wife planned to get blood work done on Monday and told him that she was feeling better after her appointment.
‘We had a plan. Kristin is a person who when she has a plan, she stick to the plan and she follows through and she does things well, every time,’ he said.
Westra was a mother-of-two and taught third through fifth grade at Chebeague Island School in Maine.
